It's back to work for the New York Islanders.
The Islanders will take on the Buffalo Sabres in Buffalo tonight in their first game back from the Christmas break. Jaroslav Halak was placed on injured reserve earlier in the morning and Jack Capuano announced that Kevin Poulin will get the start for the Islanders.
This will be Poulin's first NHL start of the 2014-15 season. The rest of the Islanders lineup will remain the same as it was on Tuesday.
Poulin has played well in the American Hockey League, where he has a 10-6-3 record for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The 24-year-old goaltender played for the Sound Tigers on Friday in their 2-0 win over the Providence Bruins. He made 34 saves in the shutout victory.
"Kevin deserves a shot," Jack Capuano told Newsday's Arthur Staple. "He played well in camp, he played well last night. He's earned it."
Tonight's game against the Sabres will be Poulin's first NHL start since January 27 when the Islanders fell at home to the Boston Bruins 6-3.
The Sabres will start Jhonas Enroth in net and Mikhail Grigorenko was called up to play against the Islanders. Enroth is 9-3-1 in his last 13 starts. Former Islander Matt Moulson will also return to the Sabres lineup after missing the previous three games with the flu.
Buffalo is 5-3-2 against the Islanders at the First Niagara Center.
