The Islanders haven't done themselves any favors in their last three games.
Their three game losing streak has allowed the Pittsburgh Penguins to move into first place in the Metropolitan Division with their win on Wednesday night and the New York Rangers to move a point behind them in the standings. So a win tonight in Philadelphia has become even more crucial as the standings get tighter.
The Islanders have not played at the level they had been playing prior to the All-Star break, with a large portion of that coming from the team's penalty kill woes. At the moment there doesn't appear to be an answer for how to turn them around.
"It's a seesaw sometimes," Capuano said on Wednesday about the penalty kill. "What I saw in a few of the games is that we won face-offs, but we didn't clear the puck. You go through that and you see the different situations, but for us we really don't want to think about it too much... We have to be stronger in front of our own net."
The Islanders will make change defensively for tonight's game. Lubomir Visnovsky will sit, while Brian Strait will take his place. Visnovsky struggled during Tuesday's loss to the Florida Panthers and made several bad turnovers.
Strait had been turning a corner when he was taken out of the lineup. The often criticized Islanders' defenseman had been playing some of his best hockey in the contests prior to Visnovsky coming back.
"The last game we won Brian Strait was in the lineup," Capuano said Wednesday. "He takes a lot of pride in blocking shots and penalty killing."
Capuano will use Jaroslav Halak in net once again and the rest of the lineup will be the same. Steve Mason will be in net for Philadelphia and center Scott Laughton will be in the lineup.
The Islanders have not had the best luck in Philadelphia. The Flyers are 17-1-2 against the Isles at Wells Fargo Center since 2007. However, the Islanders have beaten Philadelphia in their two previous meetings with them.
