Brendan Burke basically called this one on the air, as Hickey struck again in overtime. Credit Tavares, who came off the bench to help and exhibited patience when the opening wasn't there. Instead of forcing something and giving up possession, he flicked the puck toward the net, and Hickey redirected it home.
Tavares also netted one of the prettier goals we'll see this season. Bailey sent a slick, behind-the-back, cross-ice pass right on Tavares' tape, who roofed it and gave the Isles a lead they'd hold for most of the game. Bailey has probably been the team's second-best forward this season, and it's time he got some recognition for it.
Yes, it probably wasn't a decisive as it should have been, with the last-place Flames playing on consecutive nights. But a win is a win, and in the position the Isles are in, they can't afford to be picky. On to the next one, which just so happens to be against the reigning Stanley Cup champs.
The Islanders host the Pittsburgh Penguins at Barclays Center on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET.
