It may have been anticipated, but Islanders C Mathew Barzal was announced the 2018 Calder Trophy winner as the NHL's top rookie last season.
Barzal blew out the competition for the award, which was announced at the NHL Awards in Las Vegas Wednesday night. He received 160 first-place votes with the Canucks' Brock Boeser the closest in that category with two votes.
The reason Barzal was the favorite for the Calder Trophy was due to his production in his rookie season. He totaled 85 points (22 goals, 63 assists) over a full 82-game season.
Barzal, who was picked by the Islanders 16th overall in 2015, is now the fifth Islanders player to receive the award. Denis Potvin, Bryan Trottier, Mike Bossy, and Bryan Berard.
