Auston Matthews scored twice, Frederik Andersen earned his 100th NHL win and the Toronto Maple Leafs routed the New York Islanders 7-1 on Tuesday night in a game with playoff implications.
The Maple Leafs set a season high for goals and won for the third time in nine games. They moved three points ahead of the Islanders for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference.

This was a tough loss for the Islanders on the road in an important game that could have thrust them into the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern conference.
The game was actually closer than the 3-1 Leafs lead after two periods, as New York was not playing bad offensively, generating chances on Frederik Andersen but not getting the benefit of anything outside of a Jason Chimera penalty shot.
But they came out in the third and mailed it in ahead of a grudge match Thursday in Brooklyn with the New York Rangers. The Isles produced absolutely nothing on offense and totally abandoned Thomas Greiss on the defensive side.
After having captain John Tavares field more questions about his future and losing a potential head coach candidate in Claude Julien on Tuesday afternoon, let's just say it wasn't the most romantic of days for the Islanders on this Valentine's Day.
Now 3-3-1 in their last seven and facing 18 of their last 27 on the road, where they've gone 7-12-4 this season, the playoff mountain got a little higher on this night and the Eastern Conference tightens even more with the New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres winning.
Next Game: The Islanders return to action Thursday when they host the crosstown-rival Rangers at 7 p.m. EST
