The Islanders placed defenseman Calvin de Haan on injured reserve due to an upper-body injury, the team announced Monday.
Head coach Doug Weight said he had no definitive timetable for when he would expect de Haan to return, and if de Haan needs to undergo surgery, he would likely miss the remainder of the regular season, according to Newsday's Arthur Staple.
"It's either going to be a little bit or a long while," Weight said, according to Staple. "It's tough. He's a big part of our D."
In a corresponding move, the team removed defenseman Thomas Hickey from IR.
De Haan totaled one goal and 11 assists in 33 games this season, while Hickey, who last played Dec. 9, totaled one goal and four assists in 21 games.
