The Islanders placed F Jan Kovar on unconditional waivers on Wednesday, the team announced.
The former KHL star, who signed a reported one-year, $2 million deal with the Isles in July, failed to make the final cut out of training camp and never showed up to AHL Bridgeport.
The 28-year-old Czech played his last five seasons in the KHL with Magnitogorsk Metallurg, recording 286 points in 285 games.
Kovar's contract will be terminated, per Elliotte Friedman, which will take his contract off the club's salary cap.
It's uncertain if Kovar is still interested in playing in the NHL or if he prefers to return home and continue his KHL career.
