Islanders prospect GK Ilya Sorokin will be playing in the Olympics under the "Olympic Athletes from Russia" team, as Russia cannot compete in the 2018 Winter Olympics held in South Korea.
Sorokin, 22, was drafted by the Islanders in the third round of the 2014 draft. He currently plays in the KHL, where he was named Goaltender of the Year in 2015/16 then attended the Islanders prospects camp. He signed a contract extension to stay in Russia through 2020. Since 2014, Sorokin has a 1.39 GAA and .937 SV percent.
The Islanders have gotten subpar production out of the goaltending position as with Thomas Greiss and Jaroslav Halak, the team has allowed the most goals in the NHL (180).
Perhaps in the future, Sorokin may solve those woes. But for this season at least, he'll be staying in Russia and Isles fans can watch him at the Olympics.
