It doesn't get much sweeter than a win over the Rangers with playoff implications on the line. But what made it even better was how great a bounce back effort it was by the Isles tonight, as they made that shellacking at the hands of Toronto on Tuesday seem like a distant memory.
How good is this top line right now? Amazing instincts by both John Tavares and Josh Bailey on the first Islanders goal. JT knew exactly where Bailey was on the ice and found him with a pass, and Bails anticipated where Lee would be with a beautiful feed to set up the goal. Highlight reel passing that got the Isles even at one.
Speaking of Tavares, this team turned the corner when he was added to the penalty kill, and it paid dividends again tonight. The captain's insane behind-the-back feed to Nikolay Kulemin gave the Isles a 3-1 lead in the third, and took any possible Rangers momentum away early in the final stanza. Gritty set up by John, and great work by Kulemin to spark the initial chance.
With this win, the Isles inch back up within spitting distance of that final spot, making this home-and-home this weekend with New Jersey so crucial. Let's hope they're up to the challenge lie they were tonight.
The Islanders play the Devils at the Prudential Center on Saturday at 7 p.m.
