One game doesn't make a season but tonight was a dumpster fire for the Islanders, as they drop a lopsided decision to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The biggest concern coming in was the defense and tonight did nothing to alleviate those fears, as New York was dominated in their own zone by the forechecking, cycling home team and had trouble with man to man coverage and clearances in scenes reminiscent of years gone by.
Doug Weight jumbled his offensive lines at the end of the second period, also taking fans back to the days of the Jack Capuano 'line blender'. Let's not forget that last season New York was victimized more than once in lopsided defeats after Weight took over for Capuano.
In fairness, it is only one game and they get a chance at redemption immediately, taking on the Buffalo Sabres in Brooklyn tomorrow night with Jaroslav Halak in goal. Before we panic, let's not forget the defending champions lost last night in Chicago, 10-1.
While no determinations can be logically made on an entire season based on one game, and you shouldn't even attempt to, tonight needs to be thrown in the garbage as soon as possible, like before even boarding the plane back home. It was flat out ugly.
