The 19-year-old defenseman is departing the team for "personal reasons" the Western Hockey League club said in a statement released on Friday afternoon. Pilon had been with the Wheat Kings since the 2013-14 season, when he was traded from the Lethbridge Hurricanes early in the year.
"Ryan came to me this week and told me that at this time he has lost his passion to play hockey and will be leaving the team," Wheat Kings coach and general manager Kelly McCrimmon said in a statement. "We had a number of discussions, but his final decision was that this was what he felt he needed to do."
In 193 career games in the WHL, Pilon recorded 23 goals and 139 points.
