The Islanders have not had any conversations with the agents for either Kyle Okposo or Matt Martin since the season ended, according to Newsday.
Arthur Staple says that Okposo and Martin are "headed for free agency on July 1 and contracts elsewhere."
Pending UFA Frans Nielsen has had preliminary talks with the Islanders but those are in "the early stages" and he could be "out the door" on July 1.
The three players leaving would free up $6.55 million in cap space for the Islanders this offseason.
I can understand the Okposo situation, but I'm shocked by the Martin news. Obviously, the fourth line has been the team's most consistent the last two seasons, and I also felt like Matt is so invested in the area and being an Islander that it would be surprising if the team let him walk. Maybe they just don't think Martin's asking price is worth it? It's hard to speculate, but it's also tough to figure why they haven't had any talks with him at all with his free agency looming.
It does make me wonder what Garth has planned for July 1. Obviously, Steven Stamkos is the pipe dream, but with the Islanders seemingly clearing out some extra cap room, is there a pinch of reality to it? Or is Garth eyeing some pricey trade target, like Jordan Eberle? I suppose only time will tell.
