Need to Know: John Tavares recorded his first two-goal game of the season and the Islanders snapped a three-game losing streak.
Tavares scored his fifth goal of the season 3:38 into the first period to give the Isles a 1-0 advantage. Kyle Okposo added a second goal for the Isles 10 seconds into the second period, to make it 2-0. Anaheim tied the game later in the period, scoring two goals in the span of roughly nine minutes. Matt Beleskey scored on the power play at 9:15 of the second and Emerson Etem beat Jaroslav Halak at 18:51.
Tavares scored the game winner at 2:18 of overtime.
The Islanders outshot the Ducks 36 to 34 and Halak made 32 saves for New York.
Wednesday night was Tavares's first multi-goal game of the season and just the second time the Islanders have held an opponent to fewer than three goals.
Whats Next: The Islanders will be back in action on Thursday night as they take on the defending Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings at the Staple Center.
