Islanders defenseman Dennis Seidenberg has been placed on IR due to an upper body injury, the team announced Monday.
Scott Mayfield has been recalled from Bridgeport of the AHL on an emergency basis to replace Mayfield on the roster.
Seidenberg, who is out indefinitely, likely has a broken jaw after blocking a shot during Saturday night's game against the Panthers, according to SNY.tv's Andy Graziano.
As of now, Seidenberg does not need surgery for the broken jaw, reports Arthur Staple of Newsday.
Travis Hamonic and Ryan Pulock already out with injuries, which necessitated the callup of Mayfield.
Mayfield has one point in 11 career NHL games.
So let's see. The Isles are into their No. eight and nine d-men already, and we haven't even hit Thanksgiving. Yeesh.
Interestingly enough, the Isles are one team that actually has the luxury to survive this kind of injury rash on defense. Between Mayfield and Adam Pelech, they at least have NHL-caliber guys ready to step in. Ideally, they wouldn't be coming up to play top-pairing kind of minutes. And they may not be for long, considering Travis Hamonic was on the ice for Monday morning's skate. But all things considered, it's not the disaster scenario it could be.
It just goes to show that depth signings during camp, like Seindenberg was, are always a good idea, because health is far from assured in this league.
