The back-and-forth between the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets this offseason has been tremendous.

The newest member of the Nets, Paul Pierce, proclaimed his hatred for the Knicks has grown since relocating to Brooklyn. Knicks guard Raymond Felton laughed off Pierce's comments, apparently following suit of the NBA's mandate to end this intercity rivalry.

That lasted ... all of a week.

Back when I was in high school, C- was still a passing grade. But when you're being judged on an offseason worth of free-agent signings, trades and the NBA Draft, it's not as flattering.

Sports Illustrated handed the New York Knicks a C- grade for the offseason, one in which the team acquired Andrea Bargnani, Metta World Peace, Beno Udrih, Jeremy Tyler, Tim Hardaway Jr. and C.J. Leslie, and also re-upped with J.R. Smith, Pablo Prigioni and Kenyon Martin.

According to Rob Mahoney, the Knicks retained some necessary pieces and enjoyed some bargain signings, but re-signing Smith comes with its question marks, while trading for Bargnani did not address the team's needs.

The Jets vs. the Giants, the Yankees vs. the Mets, so why not the Knicks vs. the Nets?

According to a report by the New York Post, the NBA does not want any bad blood between the Knicks and Nets, so much so that Commissioner David Stern ordered a sit-down meeting between Knicks owner James Dolan and Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov this past season in an effort to end any tension between the two New York teams.

Both parties said the meeting was very cordial and pleasant, anonymous sources told The Post.

Rivalry Check is an ongoing series in which we preview 10 of the top teams in the Eastern Conference.

New Faces: The Indiana Pacers didn't make too huge of a splash this offseason, only some minor tweaks here and there. The selected forward Solomon Hill out of Arizona with the No. 23 back in the NBA Draft. It was among one of the many unpredictable moves during this year's draft, with Hill being off many analyst's radar.

In need of a backup point guard, the Pacers signed C.J. Watson, formerly of the Brooklyn Nets. Last season, Watson averaged 6.8 points and 2 assists as Deron William's backup. The team also added Donald Sloan, who last year averaged 4.1 points and 1.9 assists with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Rivalry Check is an ongoing series in which we preview 10 of the top teams in the Eastern Conference.

New Faces:?It was certainly not a busy offseason in the nation's capital, as the Wizards have added only a few role players to surround their core talent. Among the new additions is former New York Knicks forward Al Harrington, who after missing almost all of last season will attempt to add some depth to the frontcourt.

Earlier in the offseason, the Wizards addressed their backcourt. The team added veteran point guard Eric Maynor to back up John Wall. Maynor fell out of the rotation in Oklahoma City, but at times was a valuable backup for the Thunder.

J.R. Smith has been a focal point of the New York Knicks offseason, and for obvious reasons.

The Knicks re-signed the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year to the tune of a two-year deal worth nearly $18 million, including a player option for a third year.

Smith posted career-highs in both points (18.1) and rebounds (4.5) in 2012, and told KnicksNow.com there was never a question about whether or not he wanted to remain with his hometown team.

In an ESPN Insider series projecting the top performers for the 2013-14 NBA season, analyst Bradford Doolittle has New York Knicks guard J.R. Smith as the No. 7-ranked shooting guard in the league.

Smith is the lone Knicks player to crack the guard rankings, and the front court players will be ranked throughout the rest of this week.

The sixth-ranked shooting guard in the 2012-13 season, Smith is listed behind Dwyane Wade, James Harden, Manu Ginobli, Kobe Bryant, Bradley Beal and Louis Williams, who rank first through sixth, respectively.

The addition of Andrea Bargnani and Metta World Peace has New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony excited about the upcoming season, but not enough that he can commit to the team long-term.

Anthony, 29, can opt out of his contract following the 2013-14 season. He has been rumored to be a target of the Los Angeles Lakers, where the franchise will look to rebuild and reemerge after the loss of Dwight Howard.

When asked whether the Knicks? offseason transactions have affected his decision to stay with the Knicks beyond next season, Anthony said he could not comment.

A source who has been familiar with the J.R. Smith free agent situation has confirmed a Daily News report that a contract to bring the shooting guard to the Big Apple is "about done."
Smith's agent, Leon Rose, met with Garden Chairman James Dolanfollowing Wednesday's Knicks' win over Sacramento to finalize a contract. It is believed that Smith, who has also attracted the interest of the Clippers, will receive the Knicks' $2.5 million exception. Rose also represents Anthony, who has lobbied the club to add Smith, an explosive scorer who can also be erratic at times. He has averaged 12.5 points per game over seven NBA seasons.
TKB was the first to report the Knicks interest in Smith, but those familiar with the situation told me that the organization become concerned about Smith's sometimes polarizing behavior and its possible impact on the Knicks growing chemistry.

Smith is represented by Carmelo Anthony's agency CAA.

No deal has been finalized but I'm told expect an announcement soon.

Spacing in the Knicks offense is the issue.

Carmelo Anthony has zero trust in his shooters at this stage. You saw it last night at the end of one of the overtimes. Toney Douglas was WIDE open for the win and he didn't get him the ball. Melo was triple teamed and read the blitz late and the ball flipped out of bounds. Thanks for the photo @alanhahn.
