THE GAME

The Jets (1-2) at the Jacksonville Jaguars (2-1) at TIAA Bank Field in Florida on Sunday, Sept. 30, at 1 p.m. ET.

THE WEATHER

A few Florida thunderstorms in the morning will yield to a warm and muggy day with temperatures approaching 90 degrees. There could be a little late rain too, I'm guessing.

WHAT IT MEANS

The Jets didn't fair all that poorly for playing three games in 11 days at the start of a rookie quarterback's career. Sure, they're 1-2, but if they were 2-1 people would be throwing parties. I'm no mathematician, but there doesn't seem to be a big difference between those two records. Now, the schedule settles down a bit and we can find out what the Jets really are. The Jaguars are a legitimate contender for the AFC title, so going down there and winning with a 21-year-old quarterback might be a stretch. That said, if they do it, that would certainly make one heck of a statement, wouldn't it? Even playing a close game would be encouraging. And remember, no matter what the wins and losses look like, this is a season that's all about finding encouraging signs.

As if breaking multiple tackles in his 68-yard touchdown run wasn't impressive enough, Giants rookie running back Saquon Barkley has another accomplishment.

The No. 2 pick out of Penn State was named the most elusive running back in Week 1, according to Pro Football Focus.

PFF measures elusive rating to determine which players are the most difficult to tackle. It takes missed tackles, total number of touches and yards per carry after contact into account, and Barkley's long touchdown run was a big proponent in that.

Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. said he has a new outlook on the game of football after he missed most of last season with a fractured ankle.

"I'm just in a different place," Beckham said after he recorded 11 catches for 111 yards in Sunday's 20-15 loss to the Jaguars at MetLife Stadium. "Once you see everything flash before you, and you don't know if you ae going to be the same person again, you don't know if football is going to be the same again, I got a different perspective."

Beckham, the star Giants receiver who signed a $95 million contract extension prior to the season to become the highest-paid wide receiver in the league, repeated how he spent night after night praying to get back onto the field for a game for the first time since Week 5 last year.

That he did.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Elijah McGuire was pretty excited watching from the sidelines when his teammate, Bilal Powell, burst up the middle for a 75-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. So imagine how he felt two quarters later when he nearly matched it with a long touchdown run of his own?

"Oh, you can cancel Christmas," the rookie joked after the Jets' 23-20 overtime win at MetLife Stadium.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- They heard it, even though they pretended not to listen. They heard every demeaning word, every cry that they're tanking the season, every prediction that they were destined to go 0-16. They heard from media, from fans, from family, from friends.

"The more people talked about us, the more our family members and friends hit us up and said, 'You all are going to be trash this year. They're saying you're not going to win a game,'" Jets linebacker Jordan Jenkins said. "After a while it just gets to be where enough is enough."

Bowles, McCown on overtime win 00:01:52
Jets head coach Todd Bowles and quarterback Josh McCown recap the 23-20 overtime victory over the Jaguars and how they never gave up.

Chandler Catanzaro kicked a 41-yard field goal with 28 seconds left in overtime, lifting the New York Jets to a wacky 23-20 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

After Catanzaro split the uprights, he and his teammates celebrated wildly in the middle of the field - but then had to wait a moment because there was a penalty flag on the field. The officials ruled there actually was no penalty on the play - giving the Jets the victory.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have become the NFL's laughing stock with six straight seasons of double-digit losses, nine straight without a playoff berth, and only three winning seasons in the last 17 years. They need someone to completely rebuild the franchise.

And they might just turn back to the man who built it for them in the first place, more than 20 years ago.

Sunday Tom Coughlin will return to his old stomping grounds in Jacksonville, Florida when the Giants take on the Jaguars. Coughlin was the inaugural head coach for the expansion franchise.

?Terrible Tom? as they called him, spent eight seasons in Jacksonville (1995-2002) leading the team to the AFC championship in its second year in existence continuing with a run of four straight trips to the playoffs (Vacchiano, Nov. 29).

On Sept. 3, 1995, Coughlin coached his first game at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium, now called Everbank Field, while also serving as?GM of the Jaguars. His return marks the 300th NFL game in his career.

Quick previews from the Big 3 (Newspapers):

David Roth, The Wall Street Journal: The Giants are wracked by injuries along the offensive line and at wide receiver, swapping out the explosive but fumble-prone Ahmad Bradshaw for the enigmatic Brandon Jacobs at running back and coming off a pair of frustrating, mistake-filled losses. Whether this means they?re primed for a bounce-back against a just-good-enough Jacksonville squad or ready for a second-half swoon is hard to know, although your more fatalistic Giants fans are already making ?They were never that good? noises. This less-fatalistic Giants fan doesn?t know quite what type of noise to make, although I suspect I?ll know better after this week. As division leaders go, the Jaguars don?t seem all that intimidating. With the exception of an October win over the Colts, they haven?t beaten a single winning team en route to their 6-4 record. They run the ball hard and control the clock well, but Jacksonville is also yielding 27 points and a whopping 376.8 yards per game. So I?ll go with ?primed for a bounce-back,? even while my inner fatalist fan?s noises grow louder.

Mike Tanier, NY Times: While you wrap your brain around the fact that the Jaguars are in first place, reflect for a moment upon the Giants? short-lived reign as the best team in the N.F.C. Back-to-back divisional losses exposed major weaknesses: a secondary that allows receivers to get open over the middle too easily and an offense that thinks it needs to commit a minimum of three turnovers to have its parking validated. It?s a good thing the Giants? defense is stingy on third down (opponents are 7 of 43 on conversions in the last four games) and in the red zone (allowing just two touchdowns in the last 10 trips); otherwise, they would give up over 30 points per game. An injury rash at wide receiver had the team kicking tires on every irregulars-rack wideout from Michael Clayton (signed midweek) to Kevin Curtis. Phil McConkey was seen running extra hard on a treadmill recently, but that may just have been a coincidence. The Jaguars have rushed for over 145 yards in each of their last three games. Receiver Mike Sims-Walker is injured, but David Garrard has been spreading the ball to other targets efficiently. That easy win you circled when the schedule was released no longer looks very easy, though it should still be a win.
