Jake Ballard

Some player news you might have missed... From Rotoworld:

The Newark Star-Ledger expects the Giants to be interested in re-signing K Josh Brown."Brown signed a one-year deal with the Giants and had arguably the best season of his career, drilling 23-of-26 field goals and all 31 extra points. He also produced 35 touchbacks on kickoffs. Brown, 35 in April, will likely secure another one-year deal from the G-Men."

The Arizona Republic expects the Cardinals to tender an offer to restricted free-agent TE Jake Ballard this offseason."Ballard missed the first half of the season while recovering from knee surgery and was signed by the Cardinals in Week 9. He appeared in eight games (three starts), finishing with seven catches for 75 yards and two touchdowns. With Jim Dray an impending free agent, Ballard will likely be brought back as a blocking tight end behind Rob Housler."

With Rob Gronkowski's future uncertain, the Patriots will turn to former Giant Jake Ballard at TE.

Things have funny way of working out in this world. Last June, the Giants tried to sneak their convalescing TE Jake Ballard (knee) through waivers before placing him on season-ending IR. He made it all the way back to the Giants' facility before he learned he was claimed by the New England Patriots with just minutes to go in the waiver period. He, along with the rest of the people in the building, were confused and angry over the last-minute theatrics by Bill Belichick and Co.

What did they need Ballard for? They already had the league's best TE corp with Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez and Ballard was not going to play in 2012. Was this done out of vengeance, stemming from the Super Bowl loss a few months earlier?

In Todd McShay's most recent mock draft, ESPN's draft expert projects the New York Giants to spend the No. 19 selection on Notre Dame tight end Tyler Eifert.

However, a new tight end is creating a buzz in free agency.

Jared Cook, formerly of the Tennessee Titans, is emerging as one of the hottest commodities at the tight end position on the free-agent market. In this video posted on the Philadelphia Eagles website, NFL Films guru Greg Cosell compares Cook to former All-Pro Shannon Sharpe.

Some readers have been inquiring about the status of former Giant TE Jake Ballard (knee), who spent last season on IR with the New England Patriots. If you recall, he was scooped up last June off the waiver wire by Bill Belichick in what many felt was a subversive move.

The Giants tried to sneak Ballard - who was deemed medically ineligible to play on '12 - through waivers with the intention of placing him on IR. Belichick, still bitter from his latest stinging loss to the Giants in the Super Bowl, claimed Ballard at the last minute although the Patriots already boasted the best TE corps in the league.

The Giants gambled with the future of Jake Ballard and lost. Like any other gambler who walks away from the table after something unexpected happens, they are bitter. ?

Today, you can tell by the comments made by Tom Coughlin and GM Jerry Reese that they are miffed by the developments. But it's their own fault.

The Giants had no intention of keeping TE Jake Ballard around if he was not going to be able to participate this season. Yesterday, they waived him with the notion that no other team would look at the hulking TE, since he had been, in effect, ruled out for the season.

But the New England Patriots are no ordinary team. Last season, they saw up close and personal want Ballard can do for a football team. They claimed Ballard off waivers this afternoon...

TE Jake Ballard, the UDFA who came out of nowhere last year and became a reliable starter for the Giants, was waived by the Giants today after failing a physical.

DL Rocky Bernard, the 11-year veteran who played the past three seasons for the Blue, was re-signed to take Ballard's roster spot.

Ballard was not expected to play for the Giants this season after tearing his ACL in the Super Bowl. The move does not necessarily mean that his Giants career is over. The team saw no benefit of keeping him right now. He cannot be placed on IR at this point of the season and the Giants gain nothing by keeping him on the 90-man preseason roster.

With the 77th installment of the NFL draft now officially in the books, seven new faces?excluding UDFA?s?join the defending Super Bowl champs hoping to accomplish the same feat in 2012. While all of the Giants? draft picks can?t be pegged as surefire starters in the fall, they are sure to have an impact over the next five months as roster sizes are cut from 90 to 53.

Here?s how the newest class of rookies fit in:

In the seven years since the Giants traded their first-round pick to San Diego in the wow-that-worked-out-pretty-well Eli Manning deal, they've drafted a defensive player with their first pick every year except 2009, when they took Hakeem Nicks. None of those draft choices can be qualified as busts, as Corey Webster (2005), Mathias Kiwanuka (2006), Aaron Ross (2007), Kenny Phillips (2008), Nicks (2009), Jason Pierre-Paul (2010), and Prince Amukamara (2011) have all been contributors on at least one of Big Blue?s two 21st century SuperBowl title teams. (Note: Webster was technically a second round pick, but the Giants? first pick of the 2005 draft nonetheless.)

Although defense has been the norm in recent years, predicting what the Giants will do with this year?s first-round pick is no easy task. Jerry Reese tends to stray away from addressing immediate needs early on in the draft. He is a strict believer in the ?best player available philosophy?, preferring to stock talented players for the future--even if those players are not ready to make an impact right away.

One of the main reasons the Giants were able to bounce back from their late-season four-game losing streak in 2011?a month-long spell of disappointment that appeared as if it would kill Big Blue?s playoff hopes?was their no-nonsense attitude in the locker room, their ability to ignore meaningless distractions and focus on the task at hand.

There were several roadblocks which could have fractured the Giants? locker room unity last season, including Osi?s training camp holdout, Antrelle Rolle?s unhappiness over having to play cornerback and reported desire to leave New York, and the constant talks of Tom Coughlin status on the hot seat.

The Giants have resigned two of their ERFAs (Exclusive Rights Free Agents) today. The team exercised the tenders on TE Jake Ballard and CB Bruce Johnson.

As per our man at Giants 101, Dan Benton....

According to the records filed at the NFLPA, Ballard has been re-signed for one-year and $540,000, while Johnson signed a similar one-year, $540,000 tender. Both players were exclusive rights free agents.

Counting down Jerry Reese's eleven best draft picks/ undrafted free agents.

Jake Ballard: Undrafted, 2010

The big tight end caught 34 passes for 377 yards and three touchdowns during his career at Ohio State. In his one full season with the New York Giants, Ballard bettered these numbers with 38 receptions for 604 yards and four touchdowns. It?s hard to imagine that anyone saw this little used college tight end turning in starting caliber numbers. This includes Jerry Reese, considering how many times Ballard was waived and re-signed. To his credit, he was the only GM that took a chance on signing him after the draft, and any other team could have claimed Ballard the handful of times the Giants waived him.

By now, you?ve probably read every breakdown possible of Sunday?s win. If you?re like me, you basked in the glow Sunday night and let the party continue through the parade/rally and possibly through the rest of the work week.

It was a thing of beauty in my eyes, to be present at MetLife stadium on Tuesday with thousands of other Giants fanatics that played grownup hooky to be a part of Big Blue?s 4TH Super Bowl Title. But for a brief moment, my attention was diverted from the glory of the present and redirected to a cold Saturday night 6 years ago.

The Giants have revealed that TE Jake Ballard has a torn ACL in his left knee and could miss up to eight months.

Bad news for Ballard, who was already dealing with a partial PCL tear in his right knee that was going to need off-season attention. Now, both knees will.

Ballard was assisted off the field in last Sunday's Super Bowl in the second half and tried to run on the sidelines, but crumpled to the ground in pain.

As the first ever playoff game in MetLife Stadium draws nearer, comparisons are swirling regarding the 2011 squad?s resemblance to the World Champion 2007 Giants team. For the most part, I too can see the resemblance.

Just like in the summer of ?07, the Giants weren?t expected to make much noise this season. After making quick free agent splashes with top UDFA Mark Herzlich and C David Baas, Big Blue found itself sitting idly by as other teams stole headlines and marquee names.

GM Jerry Reese was under serious fire before a single preseason snap was played. Two of Eli?s top targets, Steve Smith and Kevin Boss, were allowed to quietly walk out the door and in one case into the arms of the franchise?s most hated rival. Ahmad Bradshaw too was almost not retained, but a pay cut taken by Brandon Jacobs led to his return.

During the Holiday Season, even The Bad Guy finds himself in a forgiving mood. For instance, I?ve found it in my heart to absolve Victor Cruz of his childhood allegiance to the Dallas Cowboys. So I know that you?ll all forgive me for incorrectly projecting a Giant downfall on Saturday. It just so happens that Santa was not sleeping. He received my letter, mulled it over, and decided on a bigger and better present than I had asked for. Instead of a TE, he delivered a defense to help Eli Manning soar past the Jets and land in a Title Fight on Jan.1.

Last week, one particularly enthusiastic Giants fan (see: threatens to break things after losses) referred to Justin Tuck as ?Papa Defense.? I don?t like the title, mainly because the word ?Papa? immediately makes me think of a creepy guy in a red button down shirt selling me crappy pizza. But I agree with it.

Even the Grinch loved Christmas when all was said and done. The Bad Guy is no different. But I fear that my letter to Santa might not reach his icy domain in time. Unlike the thousands of kids across the country who had their head on straight and got a jump on the wish list writing before Thanksgiving, I did not have a gift request until earlier this week. I wished for a TE and it looks like Santa is sleeping on the job.

With Ballard officially ruled out for this afternoon?s tilt against the Jets the Giants might be caught with their red velvet pants down around their black leather boots. Even if they do suit up, both Bear Pascoe and Travis Beckum are battling injuries that have been hampering them throughout the month. They were limited in practice today.

The Jets struggle against TE?s which makes the razor thin depth chart particularly frustrating. Ordinarily, the situation would not be ideal. Compound it with the fact Mario Manningham is likely a no-go today and the Giants officially can?t get out of their own way.

So it?s been an unseasonably warm December, preceded by a confounding October snowstorm that was anything but expected. But while the winds swirling the Meadowlands might be victim to off-kilter weather patterns, it seems the annual ?Coughlin Collapse? has arrived right on time.

Yes, the Giants fought valiantly against a perfect Green Bay squad. Yes, the Giants were robbed of four extra points thanks to a missed TD call on a Ballard reception. Yes, they still control their own destiny.

But am I the only one tired of the glass half full pat on the shoulder? Does anyone else remember the 2008 Giants team that steamrolled opponents, won the showdown with the conference?s other top team (Carolina), and jumped out to a 11-1 record before imploding upon withstanding a bullet wound?

Ballard's knee appeared to hit the white chalk of the sideline.?Incomplete. ?Another wasted challenge by the Giants.

By the time the clock hit zero in Foxboro, Jake Ballard had officially been upgraded from "unsung hero" to "hero."

In what has been a breakout season, Ballard had his most important performance yet, catching four passes for 67 yards, including a huge 28-yard grab on the final drive, and, of course, the game winning touchdown. Most tellingly about Ballard's ascent, the Giants had three chances to get in the end zone from the one yard line, and they ran plays towards Ballard on two of those three tries.?You think Eli trusts him?

Ballard's 395 yards are good for 9th in the NFL among tight ends. He has more yards than JerMichael Finley, Vernon Davis, Greg Olsen and Aaron Hernandez. Ballard doesn't have the explosive talent or athleticism of these?aforementioned?tight ends, but he has surprisingly soft hands, does a great job of getting open, and has an elite quarterback throwing to him. It's a great recipe for success.

Remember how hysterical some got when the lockout ended and guys like Kevin Boss and Steve Smith jumped ship. Jerry Reese was not a popular man in these parts. But time heals, and while things can quickly change, some of the decisions that were made over the summer seem to be paying off for the Giants through the first six weeks of the season.

Take for example Boss and Smith - who were effectively replaced by Jake Ballard and Victor Cruz. In four games for the Raiders, Boss has seven receptions for 149 yards and one touchdown. In six games for Big Blue, Ballard has 15 catches, 273 yards, and two touchdowns. In six games for the Eagles, Smith has five receptions, 63 yards, and no touchdowns. Cruz, meanwhile, has 21 receptions, 398 yards, and three touchdowns in six games for the Giants.

Total production: Giants - 36 receptions, 671 yards,?five touchdowns. Eagles and Raiders - 12 receptions, 212 yards, one touchdown.

The Giants have been known for some great TE play over the past quarter century. Much of it has to do with TE coach Mike Pope, who has been the constant, but he has had some talent walk through the door to work with as well.

Jake Ballard, the second-year undrafted FA out of Ohio State, is Pope's latest prospect-turned-productive pro. The others? Mark Bavaro, Howard Cross, Jeremy Shockey and Kevin Boss to name a few.

Ballard is just beginning to become part of the Giants' offense. He has 15 catches for 273 yards (18.2 yds per catch) and two TDs. Sunday against Buffalo, Ballard caught five passes for 81 yards and was wide open on several of those plays.

Where do the Giants go from here?

Because of the talent this team has(healthy & unhealthy) this team can be a 11 & 5 team. Will they be? Probably not.

Yesterday the Giants looked real bad and completely out of sync. This is a team that needed rookie camp, mini camp, training camp and most of all some key players added to the roster. All you real smart people keep reminding me that the Giants had no money. Don't blame poor Jerry Reese. You keep telling yourself that.

If you're waiting for the Giants to pick up a TE before the season - don't. ?Unless, of course, a difference-maker becomes available such as an Antonio Gates or a Jason Witten.

That's very unlikely to happen. Until they can get themselves a player of that caliber, they will stand pat with the current group residing on their roster. It does not appear they will find an upgrade in the market at this point in time.

The group consists of (in this order): Jake Ballard, Bear Pascoe and Travis Beckum. Pascoe is also listed as a fullback, but as rookie Henry Hynoski continues to develop, the versatile Pascoe will assume more of the load at TE.
