Expectations for Duda in 2017 00:02:45
Mets Hot Stove debates whether or not Lucas Duda can produce consistently in 2017.

Going into 2016, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that Lucas Duda would man first base for the bulk of the season, coming off two straight years of solid production.

A back injury derailed that plan, though, and the Mets found themselves turning to James Loney as a fill-in for the majority of the season, with Wilmer Flores seeing time against left-handed pitching until he too hit the disabled list...

Mets LHP Jerry Blevins, RHPs Bartolo Colon and Fernando Salas, 1B James Loney, infielders Kelly Johnson and Neil Walker, and OF Alejandro De Aza.

The Mets would like to retain Blevins, 33, but expect him to receive a multiyear offer elsewhere, Adam Rubin of ESPN reported Wednesday.

The 43-year-old Colon and the Mets have interest in reuniting, though Colon might be looking for a two-year deal.

It's going to be a busy, argumentative and stressful offseason. I can see it coming a mile away. There is plenty of reason to be hopeful because of the young rotation. However, because of their injuries, and the team being home on Oct. 6, it feels like the Mets took a step in the wrong direction during 2016.

Therefore, there will be lots of pressure this winter (inside and outside the organization) to be sure they're in a much better position when they hit Port St. Lucie, Florida in four months.

Last night was a confusing experience. It was painful to experience 1,500 innings of baseball between March through last night, only to see it all go up in flames in the span of 10 minutes. I thought a few hours sleep might help my perspective, but it didn't. I'm still unsure where to begin this post-game write up. So, here's where I'm at with the following...

Mets first baseman James Loney was on the field more than Lucas Duda during Tuesday's workout at Citi Field.

As a result, multiple reporters indicated Wednesday morning that Terry Collins could be leaning toward starting Loney during tonight's Wild Card game against the Giants.

"I have a good feeling about tomorrow, I think it's going to be good for me," Loney told reporters after the workout. "I feel confident. Obviously, it's going to be their decision, but I'll be ready."

The Mets need to cut down to 25 players and set a Wild Card roster by Wednesday's night's Wild Card game against the Giants at Citi Field.

The buzz from Citi Field is that they'll probably end up starting left-handed hitting 1B Lucas Duda against Giants LHP Madison Bumgarner, as opposed to James Loney. In that case, it's possible Loney is left off the roster entirely, because they'll need Eric Campbell to be a right-handed bat off the bench. Also, Terry Collins said Sunday that Seth Lugo or Robert Gsellman will be left behind, since one of the two of them will be needed to start Game 2 of the NLDS, in the event the Mets win Wednesday.

Steven Matz pitched six strong innings and James Loney belted a solo home run but it wasn't enough as the Rockies topped the Mets, 6-1.
