The Jets' first year in Adam Gase's offense isn't what anyone wanted to see. New York finished last in the NFL in yards per game (273.0), fourth-worst in passing yards (194.4), second-worst in rushing yards (78.6) and second-worst in points per game (17.3).

Yes, Sam Darnold did miss the chunk of the early regular season, and the Jets saw improvement when he returned. But with Le'Veon Bell struggling to get anything going in his much-awaited return and the offensive line being extremely porous among other issues, it's safe to say this group needs a massive amount of improvement in 2020.

That's why GM Joe Douglas went out and fixed up the O-line and added a couple weapons at wide receiver in Breshad Perriman and Denzel Mims. But there is one position group that could mesh everything together in this offensive rebuild.

To fans and experts alike, Jets GM Joe Douglas had a great first draft, as he filled numerous holes on his roster and did so with some steals as well. For QB Sam Darnold, he's particularily excited about Douglas' first two choices named that he called off the draft board.

The first is Louisville's Mekhi Becton, the massive tackle that dazzled at the NFL Scouting Combine and fell to the Jets at No. 11 overall. Becton said he and Douglas had a conversation about their Richmond roots, and had a feeling if he fell to them, he would be taken.

Given Douglas' mission to revamp the offensive line to help Darnold, Becton was an obvious choice when he was on the board, and Darnold said on Tuesday during a conference call with the New York media that he can't wait to stand behind him.

After watching who the Jets added this offseason through free agency and the NFL Draft, Jets QB Sam Darnold is confident enough to say the playoffs are certainly in reach for his team.

But that's if they put in the hard work to get there.

"We definitely have the guys to be able to win football games," Darnold told the media during a Zoom conference call on Tuesday. "As we see every year, it's about putting everything together. We still have a long way to go. We have meetings we haven't finished yet, guys still learning the playbook…Right now we're just working on ourselves and making sure we're good to go."

Joe Douglas answered a lot of questions about his plan for the Jets with what he did in the NFL Draft last week, but he obviously didn't answer all of them.

Here are some of the ones you tweeted to me this week, along with my answers in the latest edition of the SNY Jets Mailbag:

It took new Jets WR Breshad Perriman until his fourth NFL season to finally put up solid numbers on the stat sheet. Being a former first-round pick, it hasn't been what he expected.

But following a 2019 season that saw all career-highs, Perriman isn't holding back his expectations for 2020 with his latest team in New York.

"I have no doubt in my mind that it will definitely be a season to remember for me, as far as production-wise," Perriman told NJ.com's Darryl Slater. "I'm just really excited for the opportunities that I will get, just being in a bigger role."

When Joe Douglas first met Sam Darnold's parents at a preseason game last August, he did his best to reassure them that their son was in good hands. He knew Darnold was the Jets' most precious commodity. So he vowed their kid would be treated that way, too.

"I promised them I was going to do everything in my power to take care of Sam with protection and playmakers," Douglas said in a conference call on Wednesday. "I think we still have a lot to do in both those regards."

Yes they do -- especially when it comes to finding playmakers to help make the Darnold-run offense go.

If the 2020 NFL Draft continues to remain on schedule, the Jets have less than a month to decide what they want to do with their No. 11 overall pick -- if they haven't done so already.

Jets GM Joe Douglas is leading his first draft ever in New York, so he definitely wants to get the pick right. For awhile, it looked like a new offensive tackle to cover Sam Darnold would be the only avenue for him to explore as NFL free agency kicked off.

Douglas added a few pieces to his line, an objective he had from the start. However, George Fant, a depth player with the Seahawks, being the only tackle that he brought in pointed to the fact that he might explore the deep market of first-round tackles.

The Jets have eight draft picks, including four in the first two days of the draft. That, of course, includes the third-rounder they got from the Giants in the Leonard Williams trade.

Considering how many holes they have to fill after their slow trip through the free agent market, they certainly can put those picks to good use. Exactly how they'll do that is hard to know with one month still to go until the draft starts.

But here's an early projection, based on the team's needs, what sources have said about players they might like, and what scouts have said about the value of certain players in the draft...

Robby Anderson always considered himself a No. 1 receiver, even if few others did. The Jets certainly valued his speed and his potential, and they seemed pleased with the improvement they saw towards the end of last season.

But they never viewed him as their No. 1 in the past or for the future. So losing him to the Carolina Panthers isn't necessarily a big deal.

The real big deal is the problem they're going to have replacing him.

Jets general manager Joe Douglas told anyone who would listen that he was going to focus on rebuilding the offensive line this offseason -- and boy, did he ever. Four of the six free agents he signed from other teams were offensive linemen, and he brought back one from last year's Jets, too.

And that's great. The Jets' line should be better and stronger and deeper in 2020, which means more protection for quarterback Sam Darnold and running back Le'Veon Bell. The Jets' offense will be better, and obviously that's important.

But what about everything else Douglas still has to do?

INDIANAPOLIS - When Jets GM Joe Douglas watched the Chiefs and the 49ers play in Super Bowl LIV he felt the need … the need for speed.

And when he looked at the offensive players on the Jets' current roster, he knew he had a lot of work to do to find it.

"I think you saw that in the two teams that competed for the Super Bowl this year, how many explosive players they had on both sides of the ball," Douglas said. "Everyone is trying to get bigger, faster, smarter, tougher. We need explosive guys. We need explosive, dynamic playmakers."

Alabama WR Jerry Jeudy is arguably the best receiving prospect in the 2020 NFL Draft class, so media members flocked to his podium on Tuesday at the NFL Scouting Combine to hear what he had to say before his workout and interviews with teams this week.

Well, he may want to retract one statement.

Jeudy was seen wearing a Star of David chain around his neck, and one reporter asked him why he wears it. This was his answer:

The NFL's offseason started in earnest on Monday, as the league descended on the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis to begin preparations for the NFL Draft. When the week-long meat market is over, free agency will only be two weeks away.

The Jets obviously still have plenty of holes despite a strong finish to their 7-9 season. Here's a look at the five areas -- in order of importance -- that rookie GM Joe Douglas will need to address the most over the next few months:

Super Bowl LIV is finally here, as the Chiefs and 49ers square off at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Sunday night to see who will hoist the coveted Vince Lombardi trophy at the end of the night.

Both squads have their stars. Patrick Mahomes leads a stacked offense that includes Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins and Travis Kelce as his weapons. But they're going to have to face off against Richard ShermanNick Bosa and the rest of the NFL's No. 2 defense. And, of course, you can't sleep on Jimmy Garoppolo, George Kittle, and the rest of that Niners offense that ran all over the Packers two weeks ago.

But, for Jets fans, it's a chance to keep your eye on a few players that are set to enter free agency once this game is over.

Among draft experts, there is a great debate about which wide receiver is the best in this year's NFL Draft. And that debate revolves around Alabama's Jerry Jeudy and Oklahoma's CeeDee Lamb.

Both receivers check off all the boxes evaluators and coaches alike look for. Whether its top-notch speed, route-running, ball-tracking, or sturdy hands, Jeudy and Lamb possess the attributes necessary to translate their stellar college careers into NFL careers as No. 1 receivers.

And the Jets could definitely use one of those for Sam Darnold

Skimming through myriad mock drafts that have surfaced ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft, many believe Jets GM Joe Douglas will be targeting a No. 1 receiver for Sam Darnold. There are a few playmakers for New York to choose from, including Alabama's Jerry Jeudy, Oklahoma's CeeDee Lamb, and Clemson's Tee Higgins

Having a top receiver is definitely a need for the Jets, but is that what they should be focused on with the No. 11 overall pick? What about protecting Darnold?

While there's multiple playmakers to salivate over in the first round, there's just as many offensive linemen to bulk up that unit for the Jets.

Jets GM Joe Douglas

Joe Douglas is heading into his first offseason as the Jets GM, and he knows there is a lot on his plate. Multiple holes need to be filled, especially on the offensive line front and the secondary.

Knowing how crucial his first offseason calling the shots is, Douglas is already on the ground getting to work.

Douglas is at the East-West Shrine Bowl at Tropicana Field assessing some of the best college seniors the NCAA had to offer this season ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft. And, according to the Pro Football Network, he has brought reinforcements with him.

The Jets added wide receiver Jamison Crowder last offseason and throughout the tough season for his team, the wideout quietly shined.

In his first season with the Jets, Crowder led the the team in receptions (78), receiving yards (833) and touchdowns (6). His receptions was also a career-high for him personally.

Things got off to a very quick start.

With Buffalo locked into the fifth seed and the Jets eliminated from playoff contention about a month ago, Sunday's game predictably took on the characteristics of a game where nobody really wanted to be there. Sam Darnold's one-yard touchdown pass to Jamison Crowder in the fourth quarter ultimately keyed the Jets 13-6 win.

In pouring rain, the Jets - playing mostly against back-ups - led just 3-0 at the half following a disjointed affair that featured turnovers, missed kicks and all-around sloppy play.

The second half wasn't any less scrappy, even though the rain eased off a bit, but the Jets finally drove for the game's only touchdown after the Bills had tied the score. Darnold's pass to Crowder finished off a drive keyed by a couple of nice plays by back-up receiver Vyncint Smith.

Former Jets quarterback Chad Pennington had a solid career with the team, throwing for 13,783 yards and 82 touchdowns in 61 starts for the Jets over eight seasons (2000-2007).

He took the Jets to playoffs three times, something fans expect current starting quarterback Sam Darnold to do as well. Darnold has continued to improve since the Jets drafted him with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, and Pennington clearly sees those improvements happening this season.

"Although we would say that it has been up and down, I do believe there has been considerable improvement," Pennington said. "Where earlier in the year, you probably would see four to five decisions that you would question. Now you're only seeing only one to two decisions that we're questioning.

The Jets listed 12 players on Wednesday's injury report ahead of Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills, many of which did not surprise.

New York's big-play receiver was estimated -- the team did not practice on Christmas Day -- as limited with a calf injury.

Before taking the sideline Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, first-year Jets offensive assistant Hines Ward expressed how badly he wanted to beat his former team -- the Pittsburgh Steelers.

"I want to win," Ward said Friday. "I want to be beat the Steelers as much as anybody in this building. Trust me. I'm telling my guys they've got to win this one for me. I want the Gatorade shower and all that if we win."

The former Steelers wide receiver from 1998-2011 got his wish when Week 16 arrived as New York (6-9) held Pittsburgh (8-7) off, 16-10. After the game, his wish was granted when he got the Gatorade bath from wide receiver Braxton Berrios.

In a game that meant a lot more to the Steelers than it did the Jets, it took the visitors a while to get going. Pittsburgh fell two scores behind early and, although they tied the game just before halftime, the Jets managed to shut them out after half time to hold on for a hard-fought 16-10 win.

The Jets were in control for most of the first half. They played the run well, generated pressure and intercepted two Devlin Hodges passes to knock him out of the game. However, Mason Rudolph came off the bench and gave the Steelers a spark, leading them to a field goal and then following that up with a late touchdown to tie the score.

Offensively, the Jets had put together a nice touchdown drive to start the game but then once again the offense faltered once they got through the scripted portion of the gameplan. Sam Darnold's fumble after the Jets reached midfield on an attempted two-minute drill would set up thetying score.

Ahead of another matchup with an impressive defense, Adam Gase spoke about how Sam Darnold performed his last time out against the Ravens' stellar defense.

Darnold went 18-for-32 for 218 yards, two touchdowns and an interception against Baltimore during Week 15's edition of Thursday night football, but the Ravens' offense was too much for the Jets to handle as they fell, 42-21.

The second-year quarterback connected with Jamison Crowder for both of his scores on the day, including a pinpoint pass that allowed Crowder to toe-tap in a touchdown on third and goal.

BALTIMORE - Gregg Williams' defense never had a chance.

Facing the powerful Ravens and the dangerous Lamar Jackson without a bunch of their best players went exactly as expected for the Jets on Sunday night. The Ravens' MVP candidate threw for five touchdowns and ran for 86 yards as the Jets were blown out by the Ravens, 42-21

And what else would anyone expect with the Jets playing with no Jamal Adams, no Quinnen Williams, no Brian Poole, and the usual patchwork cast at linebacker and cornerback. They played hard and were actually much better in the second half, but all that was just way too much to overcome. Jackson, taken 29 spots after the Jets took Sam Darnold in the 2018 draft, was everything he was advertised to be. He completed 15 of 23 passes for 212 yards and averaged nearly 11 yards per rush. When he took off with the ball, either to run or throw, the Jets had no one that could keep up.

That's not really surprising considering that Adams, Poole and Williams are three of the best athletes on the Jets' defense. Had they had a full complement of players, Gregg Williams could have used Adams as a spy. That at least might have slowed Jackson down a little bit and minimized the damage, if nothing else.

Odell Beckham Jr. might just have talked his way out of another city and another franchise, and that opens up some tantalizing possibilities. He still is -- when his body is healthy and his mind is right -- one of the best receivers in football.

The Jets, of course, really do need a No. 1 receiver.

But what they don't need is a Beckham-sized headache.

Christopher Johnson has already promised that Adam Gase won't be fired and he'll be the Jets coach at the start of next season. There are no indications at all that the Jets CEO is willing to change his mind, no matter what happens down the stretch of the season.

But Gase sure has to be stretching his boss' patience.

Gase needed an absolute gift from the Dolphins and the officials to avoid what would have been another embarrassing loss on Sunday. The Jets won when a pass interference non-call was overturned on replay, giving them another shot to get into game-winning field goal range. Then, Sam Ficken nailed a 44-yarder as time expired to give the Jets a 22-21 win.

He was a man the Redskins drafted 105th overall back in 2015 out of Duke -- someone they believed would be their secret weapon in the passing game for years to come.

But, on Sunday in Washington D.C., Jamison Crowder was handing it to his former employer instead.

The Jets took down the lowly Redskins, 34-17, on the road, and Crowder played a big part in that. He hauled in five receptions for 76 yards with a 29-yard touchdown as the big highlight from his performance.

It was a career day for Jets quarterback Sam Darnold on Sunday against the Redskins, as the No. 3 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft threw for a personal best four touchdowns in the win.

Darnold was 19-of-30 passing for 293 yards to go along with four touchdowns and an interception. He averaged 9.8 yards per attempt, a big time improvement from his season average of 6.4 yards per attempt.

He finished the game with a quarterback rating of 121.3, which is the second highest of his career and best rating in a game this season. His career-high quarterback rating of 128.4 came in Week 16 of the 2018 season against the Green Bay Packers. Darnold's previous season-high rating of 113.8 came in the team's Week 6 win over the Dallas Cowboys.

The game against the Giants wasn't a fluke. Sam Darnold really is back on track.

The Jets' franchise quarterback had one of his finest games of the season on Sunday, shredding the awful Washington Redskins in a 34-17 win. He completed 19-of-30 passes for 293 yards with four touchdowns and an interception.

Granted, it was against the Redskins and they are a truly bad team. But the 22-year-old Darnold showed a lot of the things that made people think he was destined for greatness before he began to regress earlier this season. He made a lot of throws outside the pocket, which has always been his specialty. He showed patience and leadership in the pocket, and some fantastic throws.

The saddest thing about the current state of the Jets is that this was supposed to be the year they arrived. After nine years of waiting for a playoff game, after enduring three years of rebuilding under ex-GM Mike Maccagnan, it was all supposed to come together in 2019.

Not only didn't that happen, but now the Jets appear to be on the brink of a rebuilding project again.

Jets wide receiver Jamison Crowder spoke with SNY's Jeane Coakley after the team's 34-27 win over the Giants.

"I thought we played a really good game today," Crowder said. "Like you said, started out hot, kind of stalemated a little bit. But then was able to finish at the end of the game, and that's what we needed... Some things we still got to clean up, as always, but I thought we played good overall."

Crowder had five catches for 81 yards and one touchdown in the win. He scored on a 23-yard pass from Sam Darnold in the first quarter to give the Jets an early 14-0 lead.

In their first game against each other at their shared home in MetLife Stadium, Daniel Jones and Sam Darnold put up some solid numbers for their respective teams. But Darnold got the last laugh as the Jets pulled out a 34-27 win over the Giants.

On paper, it seems that Jones got the best of Darnold based on individual statistics--Jones finished the game 26-of-40 for 308 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions, compared to Darnold's not as eye popping performance of 230 yards and one touchdown on 19-of-30 passing--Darnold also ran in for a touchdown, as well.

But the glaring issues for Jones came at a familiar spot that's been hurting him all season: holding on to the football while in the pocket.

There are a lot of reasons why this season has gone off the rails for the Jets, and a lot of excuses that Adam Gase could easily use to explain it.

But really, there's no excuse for this.

The Jets just lost a game, by a significant amount, to the worst team in the NFL -- or what was the worst team in the NFL -- and a team that many people around the league seriously believe are trying to lose so they can the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. The Jets' 26-18 loss in Miami has to rank right up there as one of the worst losses in franchise history.

The Jets and Patriots will square off for the second time this season Monday night in an extremely short span, as the two teams saw each other just a few weeks ago during Week 3.

The Patriots hosted the Jets in the last time out and handled their business, leaving Gillette Stadium with a 3--0 record, but just based on the substitution of one player this week, Monday night could potentially be a whole different type of ballgame.

The Jets of course will be in the hands of Sam Darnold this time around, as the second-year quarterback was out with mono for the first time these two teams met this season. Luke Falk got his first career start in Week 3 with Darnold absent and struggled throughout, finishing 12 of 22 for 98 yards and an interception.

The Jets offense was undoubtedly better with quarterback Sam Darnold in Week 6 as the team picked up their first win of the year over the Dallas Cowboys, 24-22.

Wide receiver Jamison Crowder was one of the biggest beneficiaries of Darnold's return.

"It was great. The offense, I just felt like we were able to move the football," Crowder said following the win.

Sam Darnold is back. And so is the Jets' offense.

In case anyone needed proof that the problem the last three weeks had been poor quarterback play, the 22-year-old Darnold showed how much a difference even a competent quarterback can make. And he was more than competent. He was outstanding. Playing for the first time since Week 1, he completed 23 of 32 passes for 338 yards with two touchdowns and an interception

It was enough to let the Jets hang on for their first win of the season -- 24-22 over the Dallas Cowboys.

The Jets lost 30-14 to the New England Patriots on Sunday afternoon, as the offense struggled to do much of anything. In fact, the offense wasn't even responsible for the team's two touchdowns -- Arthur Maulet recovered a fumble in the end zone and Jamal Adams had an interception return for a touchdown.

Quarterback Luke Falk threw for only 98 yards and Le'Veon Bell had 18 carries for 35 yards, as the offense ended the game with 105 total yards. Naturally, head coach Adam Gase was upset with his offense's performance.

"It's brutal, I mean it's like one of those things, it's infuriating," Gase said. "Becuase youre watching the defense and special teams play as hard as they can and executing what they're being asked to do, and they're doing it well a majority of the game, and then we aren't holding our end on offense."

The arrival of Sam Darnold gave Jets fans something they had been lacking for years: Hope. And that hope for the future got stronger as the new franchise quarterback got better late in his rookie season.

Now, that hope has become excitement and expectation. Even Darnold admits things are different this season. Even he knows that what he did last season was just the start.

"I think I was in a different place," the 22-year-old said. "Just being a rookie going into my first game, I was just feeling a little bit different. I wasn't nearly as comfortable as I am now."

One of Giants quarterback Daniel Jones' biggest supporters just so happens to play for the other New York football team.

Jets wide receiver Jamison Crowder attended Duke University, the same school that Jones attended. The two never played together at Duke, but Crowder has become friendly with his fellow Blue Devil since Jones entered the league.

"I've built a relationship with him, I text him from time to time and we worked out a little bit in the offseason," Crowder said. "So that's why I know... he has the potential to be a great quarterback in this league."

The Jets wide receiver room doesn't exactly scare anyone from top-to-bottom, but there's talent.

The top-three targets for quarterback Sam Darnold on the outside are Robby Anderson, Jamison Crowder and Quincy Enunwa. In that group, New York head coach Adam Gase doesn't want or see football players.

Instead, Gase wants basketball players, and he thinks he's got them.

Last season, it was unclear who the Jets' return specialist would be, but Andre Roberts won the job and ended up in the pro bowl. He's gone now though, so who will undertake the role instead? …

Projected Starters: Ty Montgomery
Projected Backups: Jamison Crowder
On the Bubble: JJ Jones, Tim White, Greg Dortch, Quadree Henderson, Deonte Thompson, Trenton Cannon, Valentine Holmes
Departures: Andre Roberts

The Rundown

This time last year, we were talking about names like Trenton Cannon, Elijah McGuire and Lucky Whitehead as candidates for the return game. However, the veteran Roberts won the job almost by default as McGuire got hurt in camp and Cannon muffed two punts and fumbled on a kickoff return in preseason
