Jason Collins scored his first basket since becoming the first openly gay athlete in the major North American sports, then met with the parents and brother of the fallen young man he honors on his jersey.

Matthew Shepard's family was in attendance for the Nets' game in Denver Thursday night, and Collins met them after the game and gave them a token: a signed jersey.

"I got them a bucket," the Brooklyn Nets' center said with a chuckle. "And of course, I had what, like three, four, five fouls. So, I did my usual fouls and I got them a bucket. And a free throw."

It's a landmark day.

No matter where you stand on the signing of Jason Collins, who -- once he steps on the court in a Nets uniform -- will become the first openly gay athlete to participate in any of the four major North American sports, there's no denying the gravity of this moment. For those inside the LGBT community, this was an achievement long in the making.

And for a country that has taken gigantic strides towards equality for all, regardless of sexual orientation, it is a breaking of a barrier that warrants joy.

Rivalry Check is an ongoing series in which we preview 10 of the top teams in the Eastern Conference.

New Faces:?It was certainly not a busy offseason in the nation's capital, as the Wizards have added only a few role players to surround their core talent. Among the new additions is former New York Knicks forward Al Harrington, who after missing almost all of last season will attempt to add some depth to the frontcourt.

Earlier in the offseason, the Wizards addressed their backcourt. The team added veteran point guard Eric Maynor to back up John Wall. Maynor fell out of the rotation in Oklahoma City, but at times was a valuable backup for the Thunder.
