The arrival of Sam Darnold gave Jets fans something they had been lacking for years: Hope. And that hope for the future got stronger as the new franchise quarterback got better late in his rookie season.

Now, that hope has become excitement and expectation. Even Darnold admits things are different this season. Even he knows that what he did last season was just the start.

"I think I was in a different place," the 22-year-old said. "Just being a rookie going into my first game, I was just feeling a little bit different. I wasn't nearly as comfortable as I am now."

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The Giants once learned the lesson in the most painful way possible. For years they took their specialists for granted. They got kickers and punters as cheaply as possible, converted long-snappers from other positions, and considered all three very disposable and interchangeable parts.

Then came their horrific loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the playoffs in 2003, when they lost 39-38 on a dreadful triple disaster by their long-snapper, punter/holder, and kicker when they were lining up for what should've been a game-winning kick.

That's when GM Ernie Accorsi vowed: Never again. And that offseason he went on a special spending spree, bringing in quality veterans at long-snapper (Ryan Kuehl), punter (Jeff Feagles) and kicker (Mike Hollis, and later Steve Christie). He did not want to see his team lose a game ever again just because he tried to save a few bucks at those positions.

It's safe to say Jets special teams coach Brant Boyer was ecstatic to see not one, but two of his players reach the Pro Bowl last season. Kick and punt returner Andre Roberts and kicker Jason Myers both put together solid seasons, good enough to be voted among the NFL's best to represent the Jets.

But, now, Boyer doesn't have the luxury of those two on his depth chart any longer. Roberts is now a Buffalo Bill and Myers signed with the Seahawks, with both players not happy New York wasn't competitive in bringing them back.

Roberts, in particular, was one of the best return specialists in the NFL last season. He totaled 1,147 yards on 40 returns (29.4 ypr) with one touchdown, and had 324 yards on 23 punt returns (14.1 ypr) with a touchdown as well. That type of production will be hard to match, and Boyer knows it.

The Jets re-signed kicker Chandler Catanzaro to replace Pro Bowler Jason Myers, the team announced Friday.

Catanzaro, 28, was 16-for-20 on field goals and 30-for-35 on extra points in 13 games with the Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season. He was 0-for-3 between 40 and 49 yards but made all three of his attempts from at least 50 yards.

With New York in 2017, Catanzaro made 25 of 30 field goals and converted all 29 extra points. He was 12-for-17 in the 40-yard range and 2-for-2 from beyond 50.

Two special-teams Pro Bowlers won't be returning to the Jets this year.

Jason Myers, who made the Pro Bowl in 2018, posted a thank you message to Jets fans Wednesday afternoon, and SNY's Ralph Vacchiano reports that Myers indeed isn't expected to return to the Jets. Additionally, the Jets are not expected to re-sign return specialist Andre Roberts, according to the Daily News.
