Javier Rodriguez

The Mets, via twitter, announced that they cut three more players Wednesday: OF Javier Rodriguez, RHP Michael Hebert and RHP Michael Powers. All three players were drafted in 2008.

Rodriguez is, to whatever limited degree this is applicable to a minor leaguer who never hit in a-ball, the name here. He was a surprise second round pick in 2008, out of high school in Puerto Rico after the Mets first round plus trio of Ike Davis, Reese Havens and Brad Holt. Cost was clearly a motivating factor when the Mets picked Rodriguez with the 22nd pick of the 2nd round; his $585,000 signing bonus was the third-lowest of the round, and the lowest through his spot in the draft. At the time he was drafted, Baseball Prospectus's Kevin Goldstein fielded the following question:

billyho7 (san francisco): The Mets second rounder - Javier Rodriguez.....so obscure I can't even google stalk him. any info or is this an omar minaya special?

It's just a tick past the mid-point of the minor league season, and high time to start my mid-season review of my preseason Top 41 prospect list. ?I'll finish with a look at the biggest risers outside of my pre-season Top 41. If you have suggestions for ways to improve this series, hit me up in the comment section

I will not do an in-season re-ranking. ?I just don't see a point. ?I want to see the 2011 draftees play. ?I want to see the short-season guys play. ?I want to see how the guys who were recently promoted handle their new levels. ?I want to see if the guys who struggled in the first half can make adjustments. ?.

1. Emaus SpeaksBen Berkon at The Rising Apple.com talked to Brad Emaus.

Here are my favorite two questions from the exchange:

Q: Most people look at HR totals for skill progression, but your low K/high BB rates are arguably your most impressive stats. Are you more drawn to the long ball, or do you actively focus on drawing walks/limiting strikeouts?

With their 2nd round pick in the 2008 draft, the Mets selected a lean athletic outfielder from Puerto Rico by the name of Javier Rodriguez. It was the Mets 2nd round pick, but their 4th overall pick, after Ike Davis (1st, 18th overall), Reese Havens (1st round, 22nd overall), Brad Holt (1st round supplemental, 33rd overall). Also, the Mets selected Kirk Nieuwenhuis in the 3rd round of that same draft. Perhaps you've heard of these guys?

Since signing, Rodriguez has struggled with the bat.? He has not made contact, hit for power, or drawn walks.? His strikeout percentage was particularly worrisome considering his lack of ISO power. ? Although its still early, and we're working with small sample sizes, Rodriguez has put up some staggering numbers so far this season.

Has he turned the corner this year?? Let's check out Rodriguez's numbers for his first 3 professional seasons:
