Terry Fontenot, the Saints' director of pro scouting, has reportedly become the fifth person the Jets have requested to interview for their GM vacancy. Here are five things to know about Fontenot:
- Fontenot has been with the Saints for the last 16 years, the last six of which he's held his current role of director of pro scouting. His responsibilities include recommendations for player acquisitions and monitoring the waiver wire. He was a pro scout for seven seasons before getting promoted.
- According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Fontenot has a great reputation and played a key role in improving the Saints' roster.
- After Ryan Pace left in 2015 to become the Bears GM, Fontenot's job title remained the same but he "definitely had more of a voice," he told NOLA.com that year. "Mickey (Loomis) and coach (Sean) Payton really like for us to be cohesive and for us to blend, and so we're definitely going to do that," Fontenot said. "I'll get to do some college stuff, just like Jeff will do a lot of pro stuff. Having a former GM and a guy that's done all the things he's done, you've got to take advantage of that."
- Before he became a scout, Fontenot was a pro scouting assistant. During that time he helped evaluate free agents and helped with NFL Draft planning.
- Fontenot, a native of Lake Charles, Louisiana, played safety for Tulane from 1999-2002, becoming team captain in 2001.
