Quarterback: Greg McElroy, Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith (3)
Notes: McElroy makes the team because he understands how to run a West Coast Offense, but unfortunately it is his physical gifts that have kept him from being on an equal footing in the competition.
Running Back: Kahlil Bell, Tommy Bohanon, Chris Ivory, Joe McKnight, Bilal Powell (5)
Notes: If Goodson returns, I think that might be the end of McKnight with the Jets. Everything has broken right for McKnight this summer in terms of solidifying a roster spot, but it has been the off the field stuff that might endanger his tenure with the Jets.
Tight End: Jeff Cumberland, Konrad Reuland, Kellen Winslow (3)
Notes: Cumberland has emerged as a serious option for this team in the passing game and his blocking has picked up, which will keep him on the field more and the defense on their toes. Reuland has handily won the third roster spot with his play, but Smith will likely still be carried by the team on the practice squad. If the Jets are that concerned about Smith, they could potentially cut Winslow and re-sign him after week one to avoid the guaranteed season-long salary.
Wide Receiver: Clyde Gates, Stephen Hill, Santonio Holmes, Jeremy Kerley, Mohammed Massaquoi, Ryan Spadola (6)
Notes: Edwards is a gamer and we think if he is healthy he would be a good contributor to this team but his leg injury and his failure to take first team reps in the first two games is concerning. Maybe the Jets bring him back once the season begins. If Holmes isn't healthy enough to make the active roster, then maybe the Jets add Edwards or an additional linebacker.
Offensive Line: Willie Colon, Vladimir Ducasse, D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Austin Howard, Nick Mangold, Stephen Peterman, Jason Smith, Brian Winters (8)
Notes: The rookie lineman haven't taken the world by storm and the signing of Stephen Peterman and now Jason Smith will give the line a veteran presence. The team will likely still carry Aboushi and Campbell on the practice squad, but the backup center role is still of concern.
Defensive Line: Quinton Coples, Leger Douzable, Kenrick Ellis, Antonio Garay, Damon Harrison, Sheldon Richardson, Muhammad Wilkerson (7)
Notes: Damon Harrison is going to play a major role if Kenrick Ellis can't stay healthy. Leger Douzable has had a great camp and first few games and has earned him a spot with the team.
Linebacker: Antwan Barnes, Nick Bellore, Demario Davis, David Harris, Danny Lansanah, Garrett McIntyre, Calvin Pace, Ricky Sapp (8)
Notes: This group looks somewhat different from a year ago: they are solid but not spectacular. Concerns about their ability to hold up in coverage are valid and David Harris hasn't been the force we've seen in years past. Bellore will likely be the leader of the special teams unit and Danny Lansanah will take over backup work for Josh Mauga who has struggled to stay healthy this summer.
Secondary: Antonio Allen, Josh Bush, Antonio Cromartie, Jaiquawn Jarrett, Dawan Landry, Ellis Lankster, Dee Milliner, Isaiah Trufant, Darrin Walls, Kyle Wilson (10)
Notes: For as good as the depth is at CB 1-4, it is just as questionable at S 1-4. More than ever, this is Kyle Wilson's year. He could see time at the CB2 if Milliner struggles, and he could also see time as a safety if Jarrett and Allen don't work out.
Specialists: Tanner Purdum, Nick Folk, Robert Malone (3)
Notes: Folk has more than held off Cunditt and while it is being said that Quigley could challenge Malone, but I'll go with the incumbent until I see otherwise.
Squadders: Oday Aboushi (OL), Junior Aumavae (DT), Will Campbell (OL), JoJo Dickson (LB), Donnie Fletcher (DB), Sean Progar-Jackson (LB) Zach Rogers (WR), Hayden Smith (TE)
Notes: There's a number of players who, given more time, might be able to contribute to the team either later this season or next year. Watch out for Chad Spann (RB) as another potential player in this group. We get the feeling that the Jets are carrying Dalton Freeman (C) for now until they can find a time to put him into the waiver process amidst the flood of other players to reclaim him as an IR player.
