After Andy Dalton's playoff showing and wholly inconsistent play over his career, the Bengals are a team that ought to objectively assess their quarterback spot. McElroy is a good guy and our hope is that they let him factor into any future competitions.
With the Jets, McElroy was a competent quarterback who had history running a West Coast style system. But it was McElroy's ability to drive deep passes that might have been a determining factor when Marty Mornhinweg and the Jets were forced to pick between two project quarterbacks for 2013. Matt Simms struggled with his accuracy up until this season, but made marked improvements this summer. While Mornhinweg does run an offense with a West Coast moniker, the Jets offensive coordinator also knows that deep passes are an element that has to be part of a modern West Coast.
