The Jets have continued to rotate Demario Davis and Erin Henderson, with Jamari Lattimore also getting some reps on passing downs. The biggest change this week was that the Jets were employing Davis as an outside linebacker in their nickel package, with Lattimore also on the field alongside David Harris. This meant Davis was effectively operating as an edge rusher at times.
Davis was productive in this role, with one sack and four pressures, two of which came as he was unblocked off the edge. Davis also had three tackles, including one on a third-down scramble to force a punt. He did give up a 16-yard reception, but that was on third-and-30.
Henderson had a couple of nice run-stuffs, but left a receiver all alone at the goal line on the Texans' two-point conversion, while Lattimore played a season-high 28 snaps and avoided making any mistakes.
Harris had just two tackles, but one was a tackle for loss, and he got some good penetration in the running game and as a pass-rusher. He broke up a pass with good coverage on third down and showed unexpected athleticism by running 30 yards down the seam with a receiver on another incompletion. He did get called for a defensive hold on one play, though, and that negated a Calvin Pace sack. Pace did stuff a run soon afterwards and blew up another run by getting good upfield penetration.
Lorenzo Mauldin continued to make some good contributions as a pass-rusher, with some good pressure and a hit. He also drew a triple-team with an inside rush that freed up Wilkerson for one of his sacks. It was interesting that the Titans ran the read option at him because that was something I identified as an area where he had made mistakes in college. Once again, he was fooled by Marcus Mariota keeping the ball, but a defensive back came up to make the stop in space. On the interception, Mauldin actually dropped back into coverage as the Jets mixed up their blitz personnel.
Finally, Trevor Reilly got into the game in the second half and beat his man around the edge for a pressure on one play.
Next up…with Darrelle Revis back, the Jets secondary held up well, but let up a bit in the second half…
