Now Commenting On:

No surprises here as it has been discussed about at length for quite some time now. Jason Smith was merely means to an end that shipped Wayne Hunter to St. Louis while paving the way for Austin Howard's emergence. His role in the jumbo package was more or less subdued and didn't really have that great an impact. I guess number 63 is no longer eligible. The other Smith, who drew more ire from fans than anything else, struggled last season with injuries and served more as the mentor to the Jets' two new starters in Bell and Landry.

Pace, with his cap number, was a no-brainer. While he never truly lived up to his contract, he was a solid contributor and perhaps he can return on a lower level deal in a more reserved role. Baker's release is interesting. He was making strides in training camp before he fell victim to yet another injury. I would not be surprised to see him return to compete in camp again with the tight end position up for grabs should Keller depart.

UPDATE: The Jets have also released Bart Scott in the process.  Scott's agent was scheduled to meet with the Jets later this week in Indianapolis.  Stay tuned on whether or not both sides considers bringing him back as a veteran minimum player.
