In his latest mock draft, Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer has the Jets taking Sam Darnold as their quarterback of the future at No. 3.
Many experts believe Darnold could be the first overall pick by the Browns, and if he doesn't land with Cleveland, then the Giants would scoop him up at No. 2. However, with Josh Allen as Breer's No. 1 pick and the Giants electing to go with Saquon Barkley over a quarterback, Darnold drops in the Jets' lap.
So, there is no need for the Jets to choose between Josh Rosen or Baker Mayfield.
"Question of Josh Rosen vs. Baker Mayfield is solved in the building with the safest QB's presence on the board," Breer writes.
The Jets are meeting with Darnold on Tuesday to assess his football acumen and physical attributes one last time before the draft. They also just evaluated another top quarterback prospect in Josh Allen on Monday.
There is little doubt the Jets won't go after a quarterback with their top pick after trading up with the Colts from No. 6 to No. 3.
The 20-year-old Darnold completed 63.1 percent of his passes for 4,143 yards, 26 touchdowns, and nine interceptions in 14 games in 2017 during his second season as a starter for the Trojans.
