New director of player personnel Brian Heimerdinger compared defensive end Leonard Williams falling to the Jets with the sixth overall selection to Christmas morning (Cosentino, June 5).
Williams, who some experts considered the most talented player in the draft, was expected to be off the board before the Jets were set to pick.
"Surprised and excited. Very happy. It was like getting your favorite Christmas present when you walk down the stairs on the 25th of December." Heimerdinger said. "Very excited. He's a big, strong athletic guy. Usually, you like to have those guys."
First year GM Mike Maccagnan hired Heimerdinger as one of his first personnel moves in January. Heimderdiner is also the son of Mike Heimerdinger, who was the Jets offensive coordinator in 2005.
