Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine has turned down a contract extension, per source. Not signed after end of this season.
Are we to read into this that Rex Ryan's job is safe, since the fact they offered him an extension would suggest they want to keep most of the defensive staff intact? Should we also be concerned that he doesn't want to stick around?
His main reason for turning down the extension could perhaps be that he wants to keep his options open, although if he was going to get a head coaching offer, then that's a higher position so the extension wouldn't prevent him from interviewing for and taking that job.
I'm sure we'll be better placed to process this information in due course, but in the mean time, feel free to speculate wildly as to what it means...
