ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting tonight that it is a “virtual certainty” that disgruntled backup QB Tim Tebow will end up with his hometown team, Jacksonville. Remember, the Jaguars also were in the Tebow trade sweepstakes when Denver unloaded Tebow on the Jets in March.
It was a failed ploy to bring in a multidimensional player like they had had in Brad Smith in years past. Smith was a lean and lithe runner who was one of the best runners I've ever seen in the open field. Tebow is more like a pinball, and the dynamic that he brought to the team was not even close to the same in terms of athleticism as Smith had as a runner. Of course, Smith was able to make plays solely with his feet. Tebow in the past has relied on the threat of using his arm (to however good or bad you'd like to argue) to help him run the ball better. The Jets wouldn't let him do that and handcuffed him.
If the Jets can get anything for Tebow in the exchange, that's a good thing ... it might become a staring contest between teams though ... so don't expect a quick answer to this roster question.
