Now Commenting On:

Jeané Coakley, SNY Jets Reporter:This will be Nick Folk’s fourth year with the Jets. This kicker is no stranger to competing for his job and this camp he is battling it out with Billy Cundiff. He also just took on a new job: being a dad. Here’s the latest with kicker Nick Folk.

Jeane Coakley: How’s camp been?

Nick Folk: It’s been great. It's been good to get out here, be with my teammates, build a little comrade and then get on the same page with Tanner [Purdum], Rob [Malone], [Ryan] Quigley and Pat [Scales] all working together, so when it comes Week One, we are all rocking on the same level, going at the same pace, the same intensity, and we are all on the same page.

Coakley: You have a new special teams coordinator -- no more Mike Westhoff -- Ben Kotwica. What is Kotwica like?

Folk: He is awesome, first of all. He has done a great job so far. He has taken what he liked from Mike, he has taken his own personality and put it all together and made it his. I think he is going to be great for us this year. We're going to have good game plans. It's going to be real simple, guys are going to understand what they are doing and why they are doing it. Think it will be good for us this year.

Coakley: As a kicker, how do you approach a season?

Folk: It’s different in the sense that you have to be in tune, mentally, at all times. Even in practice, when they are grading every rep we are doing, like they are grading all the other guys, but they get thousand and thousand of reps, where we might get 50 or 60 kicks. If our percentages -- if you don’t do one well -- are going to be down or what not. So you have to be mentally prepared when you come into camp. So I think that’s the big thing I take time off mentally from the game. After I get away from it, I will still lift and work out, but no kicking, I'll get away from that. So, coming into the season, I want to come in as strong as physically possible, so I am ready to go for 20- or 22-weeks. It’s been a good start and we are going to keep it going.

Coakley: You are now a dad, times two.

Folk: I am a dad times two. It is awesome. I got to be there. Rex let me go on Tuesday’s afternoon (August 6th), they were born Wednesday (August 7th) night at 8:37 and 9:00. It is awesome. I then flew to Detroit right after the next day flew back there right after the game. Been going back and forth. I kinda want camp to end so I can go home.
