Now Commenting On:

Antonio Cromartie believes the NFL should let players smoke weed.

"We’re just going to do it anyway," he said. "They just need to let it go. They need to go ahead and say, ‘Y’all go ahead, smoke it, do what you need to do.’"

Cromartie discussed this topic, and others, in the video we posted earlier.

Cromartie has clarified his statement.

Just to be clear, as far as I can tell, I was the first the the Jetsbloggydome to post the interview and I didn't do it to be salacious or controversial -- I did it because we value Cromartie's opionions on football and other topics.  Personally I didn't even think his comments on marijuana registered a blip on the radar.  They weren't even worth playing up as they seemed dismissive of the whole issue in a toothpaste-out-of-the-tube way rather than in a CROMARTIE REEFER MADNESS!!!! way.

To give you the reader some perspective, I lean strongly libertarian in my beliefs despite my more narrow personal orthopraxies and beliefs.  So what do I think about the whole thing?

I think that former Jet Ray Lucas has been very up front about the problems of prescription pain killer addiction in the NFL.  I think that Ricky Williams has been open about this topic, for years.  I think the commissioner of the NFL has already toyed with the idea of medical usage.  I think that HBO Sports recent discussion on the use of marijuana in the NFL has likely opened more eyes on how widespread it is.   I think I agree with Dr. Drew Pinksky, who said last year that "any chemical can be either good or bad depending on the circumstance of the use and relationship with the drug. Morphine [is] good if you have cancer, bad if you are a heroin addict."

I think playing in the NFL is a painful business and one addiction (Vicodin, alcohol, marijuana, etc.) is no better or worse than another.   I think I'd rather players have a support system to deal with the toll that playing the sport puts on their body rather than have them self-medicate without accountability.
