Now Commenting On:

The Jets are preparing to go without linebacker Jermaine Cunningham this season as they believe he has a torn Achilles tendon that will keep him out for the year.

Cunningham left practice on Saturday with a leg injury to his right leg and couldn't put weight in it. The staff was concerned with the injury and now it appears he will be lost for the season with the injury.

Cunningham appeared in two games for the Jets at the end of last season, but the team hoped that he would take snaps in pass-rushing situations.  He was expected to be a key reserve on defense.

It's certainly a blow to the depth of the depth of the outside linebacking group, but Cunningham has struggled to stay healthy since the Patriots drafted him.  The team's move of signing Jason Babin seems much more prescient in light of the grim news for Cunningham.

The injury to Cunningham opens the possibility for Antwan Barnes to return to the team this year.  Cunningham had a good offseason with the team and seemed a likely candidate to edge out Barnes for his roster spot as a result of Barnes' slow recovery from an ACL tear last season.  If the Jets think that Barnes can be healthy in the next month, it might provide more depth for the team.

This also opens the possibilities for a player like Trevor Reilly. Reilly was the team's seventh round draft pick and might see more work with the second team as a result.
