Bent, theJetsBlog.com: While it sounds like there's still a chance he will miss a game or two, it's obviously a relief to hear that Eric Decker's knee injury is not serious. However, lost in all the concern over that is the fact that Chris Owusu also hurt his leg - although it's not readily apparent when - and could miss two weeks per Bowles.
With Devin Smith apparently physically ready to play and Jeremy Kerley available - Todd Bowles' exact words: "If I need him" - that's not necessarily going to mess up the receiver rotation, but it does have me wondering who would return kicks in his absence. Ultimately, it may prove moot if the Jets continue to keep their opponents' score down so they aren't kicking off very often, especially if it's a touchback every time, as it has been so far. Still, it's fun to consider the possibilities.
Bilal Powell and Zac Stacy are currently listed as #2 and #3 respectively on the official depth chart, but we know how reliable that is. Powell has done some returning in preseason and spot duty but neither has much experience there, even at the college level. You'd think Smith or Jeremy Kerley would have a lot of kickoff return experience, but that's not the case. Perhaps the most experienced option would be Antonio Cromartie, but I doubt the team would risk that, especially with Darrin Walls already hurt.
Could Marcus Williams be an option? He didn't get any chances to return kicks in preseason with Houston last year or the Jets last year, but he had nine touchdown returns in college, seven on interceptions and two on kickoffs. Another option would be to activate Walt Powell from the practice squad, but who do you cut? The person you were going to cut anyway when Sheldon Richardson returns from suspension, perhaps...
