Now Commenting On:

It has been reported that Darrelle Revis has signed a one-year $12 million contract with the New England Patriots according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

But did he really?  20 minutes after Schefter's tweet Darrelle Revis' business manager John Geiger tweeted this.

It's just our guess, but we have to imagine that the contract has to include some language about franchising.  Revis has always hated the concept and won't agree to any deal without that stipulation.  Well ... that and Revis probably wants in writing that he and Bill Belichick can consummate the contract by drinking blood out of a baby's skull.

We have no reason to believe that the the Patriots and Revis won't wind up together.  We're not holding out hope for any wild romantic gesture from the Jets.  John Idzik will not be holding a boombox over his head blasting "In Your Eyes" on Revis' front lawn much to a disapproving Schwartz & Feinsod.

Once the Bucs were rumored to cut Revis, the Patriots were always the most likely outcome for Revis. While it was nice to think that Revis might return to the Jets, John Idzik holds no nostalgia for Darrelle Revis.  I love what Revis can do for a Rex Ryan defense, but even if the Jets were to get Revis to agree to a similar one-year deal, what then?  Does he go to the Pats in 2015 instead?  What if they got him to agree to a three year deal?  What happens in a year when he determines he is worth more than his 3 year $39 million with $20 million guaranteed is paying him?  He did it with the Band-Aid contract, don't doubt he'd just do the same thing again.

The Patriots have struggled to field a decent home-grown secondary for ages and Revis will lock down opponents top option on a transitional Patriots defense.  The good news for the Jets is that unless the Patriots make a major overhaul, that team will still be able to be had in the running game in 2014.

Sooner or later the Jets have to stand up to the Patriots.  They've done it before under Rex Ryan and they can do it again, with or without Darrelle Revis.
