And Jets coach Rex Ryan seemed even more convinced the Jets are right during a conference call Saturday, having watched Edwards practice for three consecutive days.
"I remain optimistic about Monday night," Ryan said when asked if Edwards will play against Tennessee. "How much he’ll play, we’ll see, but I’m optimistic he’ll be ready for Monday night."
However, the coach declined to predict how many snaps Edwards might be able to play. He had been limited in practice all three days and still is recovering from a hamstring tweak suffered in the fourth quarter of Seattle’s overtime win at Chicago on Dec. 2.
"We’re not going to put specific play numbers on him," Ryan said. "We’ll just see how he progresses. Right now, I feel like he’s getting better each day. So again, I think Monday night he’ll definitely get to play. We’ll see how much. … I believe he will play."
It's hard to gauge just how much of an impact Edwards might or might not have with three games remaining, but his familiarity with Mark Sanchez is a big plus, as is his size and ability to play more physically than some of the other receivers that the Jets have on their active roster. With Keller likely out again this week, and projecting Jeremy Kerley and Chaz Schilens as the top two receivers most familiar with Sanchez, it would make sense if Edwards either platoons some with Schilens or acts as the third receiver with whomever else he would properly complement on a given play. Some have brought up Sparano's unfamiliarity with Edwards ... while that might be true, it's not like Sparano is unable to figure out a use for him, Sparano had Brandon Marshall in Miami for two years so does have some idea how to use such a player. Of course, Marshall only totaled 9 TDs in two years while in Miami and Marshall has already met those numbers in one year in Chicago. Granted, the QB situation is a little different.
All in all, I'm glad to see that Edwards will most likely be playing this week for the Jets and suspected that the Jets would not have signed him if they didn't think he could play -- we'll just have to wait and see how much help he can be. Edwards first game as a Jet came on a Monday night ... so it's kind of poetic that it will be again on his second time around with the team ...
