A source told FOXSports.com that the Ravens want wide receiver Anquan Boldin to renegotiate the $6 million base salary he is set to earn in 2013. Otherwise, Boldin will be released before Tuesday’s start of the free-agent signing period.
Boldin was a favorite target for Joe Flacco in the past few years, and he's just the sort of versatile possession receiver that I think the Jets could use this year with the introduction of Morhinweg's WCO. Boldin was scheduled to make $6 million, but the market for his services will likely be limited and I doubt he'd see close to that money should he be cut. The Jets have the luxury of signing a player like Boldin before they would take care of the Holmes situation, so that's got to come first, but if the team is "insisting" that Holmes take a cut ... you never know.
Stephen Hill had a rough first year, but the flashes of his ability were there. Moving forward, the Jets are going to use Stephen Hill as the field-stretcher and deep threat, Kerley will settle into a role in the slot, but he's clearly comfortable moving around and flanking when required and still being productive. While Holmes still might have some of that playmaking left in him that we saw in 2010, between already losing some of that speed, his injury and some of the inconsistency that he's shown evidence of over his career, he's going to need to move more into a reliable move-the-chains role with whomever the Jets start as quarterback in 2013. All I'm saying is if he isn't with the team, I can think of a good option to replace the production that they need from that role should Boldin no longer be with the Ravens on Tuesday.
