Rex Ryan, who had been coy about the decision, confirmed Smith will get the call after the Jets' 35-24 preseason loss to the Giants Friday night.
"Yeah, he'll be our starter," Ryan told reporters. "He's done everything we've asked."
Smith had a solid game Friday night. He played the first half and went 9-of-14 for 137 yards including a 1-yard touchdown pass to rookie tight end Jace Amaro in the second quarter. Smith ran three times for 17 yards.
No surprise, the Jets were waiting for a performance they could hang their decision on and Geno's crisp game against the Giants proved the obvious opportunity to justify Geno being the starter at the outset of the season for the Jets.
Having Vick as a backup is a luxury for the Jets and affords them a competent backup should things fall apart.
There are rumblings now from the coaching staff that Vick didn't take the competition seriously enough, but Geno winning the starting job is more convenient ... at least for now. The good news is that their backup is worlds better than the team had last year and should the team determine their starter is stumbling, they have a legitimate second option.
