Tom Gamble High on Jets List -- According to Albert Breer, the Jets top candidate is Tom Gamble -- and rightly so. Gamble has done a great job, is untainted by having a record of his own as a prior GM, but would still be a good fit in New York. If Gamble is at the the top of the Jets list - it will all depend on how serious Gamble is about the Jets. This report is a backdoor way to tell Gamble that he might be able to command more out of the Jets than other candidates might have otherwise. We'll see where things go from here, but I still think it's going to be a big sell to Gamble to take the job and not have say in who the coach is ... again ... maybe that's why the Jets have Rex on lockdown right now. Let the Gamble situation play out and then go from there.
Heckert Enters the Race -- People look at Tom Heckert and see Cleveland Browns and unfortunately don't see past it. Heckert had a long run as a scout and then Director of Player Personnel with the Dolphins in the 90s, then went on to be Reid's right hand man in Philly during the NFC Championship and Super Bowl run. Heckert knows how to put together a team. While he only had three years with the Browns, he was building quite a roster. Joe Haden, Phil Taylor, Jabaal Sheard, Greg Little, Trent Richardson, Brandon Weeden, Mitchell Schwartz and Billy Winn? Not to mention Josh Gordon who looks to be a very promising receiver that the Browns took in the Supplemental Draft this past summer. The Browns play in one of the toughest divisions in football and I think were in the midst of building some long-term stability through the draft. Heckert was a casualty of the addition of Joe Banner. Banner and Heckert don't have the best history and so Heckert was out once Banner was in. Heckert won't get the same traction as other candidates, but the dude can build a team.
