It took a little longer than many expected, but the Jets finally got the edge rusher they so desperately needed.
And this one comes with a bit of a risk.
The Jets took Florida linebacker Jachai Polite with their first of two third-round picks (68th overall) on Friday night. The 6-3, 258-pounder is loaded with potential and racked up 11 sacks last season. But he also has some character red flags that had some around the NFL wondering if he'd slip all the way to Day 3.
The concerns mostly stem from what was an absolutely disastrous combine performance. He showed up looking out of shape and ran a disappointing 4.84 in the 40 and then declined to do any more drills due to a hamstring injury that he suddenly said he had been dealing with for weeks.
And his interviews were worse. Several teams were reportedly turned off by his attitude. And in his interviews with the media, he actually called out multiple teams for doing nothing but "bashing" him when they met with him at the combine.
And to make matters worse, a month later at Florida's Pro Day, he ran a 5.04 in the 40, leaving many to wonder if his freakish athletic ability was a myth, and if his production at a junior was an aberration.
But the Jets, apparently, didn't care. They were desperate for help in the pass rush after striking out on edge rushers in free agency and after going with big defensive tackle Quinnen Williams with the third overall pick in the draft, rather than taking one of the elite edge rushers available.
If Polite can get his attitude checked and rediscover his speed, this could turn out to be steal for the Jets, which is obviously what they're hoping for. But based on what he showed in the run-up to the draft, there's a pretty good chance this will be a bust of a pick, too.
