Groves has also worked out for the Titans, Redskins and Patriots.
Groves has bounced around the league since being drafted by the Jaguars in 2008. Last season, in just five games for the Browns, he had four tackles, two sacks and two forced fumbles. He was released by the team in early June.
This might lead to speculation that the Jets are on the lookout for another pass rusher and that perhaps they are concerned about Antwan Barnes' status heading into camp coming off an injury or the progress of Jermaine Cunningham and the two rookies they drafted in April. However, the reality is that Groves has never generated much in the way of pressure and in recent years has been used more as an edge setter and in coverage.
If they were to sign Groves, look for him to slot behind Calvin Pace on the depth chart.
It probably shouldn't go unmentioned that Groves was arrested for solicitation in April last year, although he expressed remorse for that incident.
Bent is exactly right on where Groves would fit. It wouldn't surprise me if Groves is at camp come Thursday, but the proximity of the Jets evaluating Groves to training camp certainly makes it noteworthy.
The Jets might have simply been refreshing their files on Groves should the need arise, but we fully expect that the team will want to give players like Trevor Reilly, IK Enemkpali and others a chance to win their roster spots. If Groves' presence helps them do so, then all the better.
