“Just that baseline understanding of everything that was going on last year. From the cadence to formations to the mechanics of how the offense actually works," Smith said when asked about the difference between last season and this year’s offseason. "Everything is just so foreign. So you have to learn everything from the ground level. And that’s not so much the case this year. I can actually focus on just learning the new offense like any other player would."
“It takes a lot off my plate,” he added.
The Australian-born Smith is a complete athlete, having earned a basketball scholarship to study and play in the US, before going back to Australia to focus on professional rugby.
Smith was signed by the Jets in April 2012 and placed on the practice squad. In October of 2012 he was promoted to the active roster.
