Jamal Adams understands that the Jets' potential moves in free agency are well above his paygrade, but the two-time Pro Bowl safety knows whom to pursue if he were general manager Joe Douglas.
As a field reporter Sunday during the 2020 NFL scouting combine's defensive backs workout at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Adams was candid when asked by NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah about the looming free agents he would want on his team.
Adams had three immediate preferences in mind, and the trio shared the common trait of pass-rushing -- Seattle Seahawks defensive end Jadevon Clowney, Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Yannick Ngakoue and Los Angeles Rams outside linebacker Dante Fowler.
"I would definitely go for Clowney," Adams said. "Pass rusher -- that's what I'm looking forward to. That's a safety's best friend, you know what I mean? But definitely Clowney. Big 9-1 down in Jacksonville (Ngakoue) -- he's a beast -- Dante Fowler. I mean, it's so many guys coming out right now in free agency that we can sure use coming off that end, man. I'm going to be competing, as far as the sacks -- don't get it twisted."
Despite desiring a dynamic pass-rushing teammate on defense, Adams proved in 2019 that he can hold his own coming off the edge. In 14 games, Adams recorded a single-season career-high 6 1/2 sacks.
Adams flirted with the NFL record for a safety set by former Arizona Cardinals safety Adrian Wilson in 2005, falling 1 1/2 short from tying the mark after missing two games due to an ankle injury.
Totaling 22 1/2 sacks among the trio in 2019 between Fowler's 11 1/2, Ngakoue's eight and Clowney's three, Adams would welcome any of the three with open arms.
Pointing to his past season's production, though, Adams feels he can hold his own while lined up next to them.
"No question," Adams said. "Hey, man, everything happens for a reason. But if I would've stayed healthy -- (the safety record) was eight. I had 6 1/2, missed two games. If I would've stayed healthy, I would've definitely broken it, but it wasn't meant to be. But the best thing about is I've got another opportunity. Best believe I'm going to get it."
