The Jets 10-man practice squad roster is officially set with the team's announcement of their last players on Tuesday. The squad consists of many familiar names that have been with the Jets over the past one or two seasons and a smattering of this year's draft picks along with a few claimed players.
While this is decidedly unscientific, here’s how I would rank the Jets 10 players on their practice squad in order of which players would be promoted to their practice squad first to last.
#1 Daryl Richardson - RB
Height: 5-10 Weight: 206
Age: 24 Experience: 3 School: Abilene Christian
Comments: Chris Ivory is a punishing running back, but his history demonstrates that he can have trouble staying healthy due to his style of play. Richardson joined the Jets this year after being waived by the Rams where he started three games in 2013. Richardson could not fill the void left by Ivory directly, but Powell could fill in passably as the team's power back and Richardson would fall in line behind Powell as a change-of-pace back / third down back. Richardson is decent in pass protection and can be useful in the passing game on checkdowns and dumpoffs. He seems the likely choice to be the first off the squad, even if just for special teams work.
#2 Rontez Miles - S
Height: 6-0 Weight: 202
Age: 25 Experience: 1 School: California (PA)
Comments: Miles has been a special teams standout for the Jets and might find a place on the team after the first few weeks settle down and their roster comes in line. Miles spent time with the Jets in 2013 and is known as an explosive tackler. Coach Rex Ryan loves Miles' attitude and dedication and would like to see this hard-hitting safety contribute to the team.
#3 Tevita Finau - DT
Height: 6-5 Weight: 288
Age: 28 Experience: 1 School: Utah
Comments: Finau saw 76 of 85 defensive snaps for the Jets in their last preseason game as the team gave him an extended tryout before determining whether he would make the team. Finau graded out well as a pass rusher for the Jets and should the team have any extra bodies needed on their defensive front, Finau seems a good choice.
#4 Matt Simms - QB
Height: 6-3 Weight: 210
Age: 25 Experience: 2 School: Tennessee
Comments: A third quarterback might otherwise be on the roster, but the Jets have pressing depth needs elsewhere and so the team saved a spot. Boyd's tryout with the team seems done, he's reportedly packed his bags and is heading home to consider his next move. The Jets might bring Boyd back on a futures contract, but Boyd was Rex's draft pick and Idzik doesn't seem inclined to indulge him any further with it this season. If Matt Simms gets moved to the active roster, then it means that something has gone horribly wrong and one of the Jets two quarterbacks has suffered an injury and won't be able to play for a period of time. Vick might replace Smith at some point this season, but the need to activate Simms we suppose would only come due to injury. Simms showed a competence but not a flash with the Jets offense in the preseason.
#5 Quincy Enunwa - WR
Height: 6-2 Weight: 225
Age: 22 Experience: Rookie School: Nebraska
Comments: Enunwa was one of the last players cut after cutdowns in an effort to make way for claimed players. Enunwa has potential, but is still very much a project player for the Jets. Enunwa had an inconsistent camp and was behind the 8-ball due to an injury suffered at the outset of camp. Once he was able to return to the field, Enunwa had some moments but was unable to catch a pass during any of the team's preseason games. Enunwa was a gamer at Nebraska and with a little patience could bloom into a future possession receiver for this offense.
#6 Jeremiah George - ILB
Height: 5-11 Weight: 219
Age: 22 Experience: Rookie School: Iowa State
Comments: George was on the regular roster for a few days, but likely was bumped off in favor of AJ Edds (in the league since 2010) because the team felt they needed more linebacker depth with Nick Bellore recovering from a minor injury from the team's last preseason game. George, a 2014 draft pick, is an undersized linebacker with good speed which will be best served on special teams and not in the team's base or sub-package defense.
#7 LeQuan Lewis - CB
Height: 5-11 Weight: 190
Age: 25 Experience: 2 Arizona State
Comments: Lewis has been quite the journeyman in his time in the league (eight NFL teams since 2011, now in his second time with the Jets) and he knows the Jets system from his time on the practice squad in 2012. Lewis might need more time working with the Jets scheme before he is comfortable in a game situation and defending NFL-level receivers for Rex Ryan's aggressive defense, but there's some reason that he's been picked up again and again by many NFL teams in four years. (updated, got my d-backs confused, wherps -BB)
#8 Chris Pantale - TE
Height: 6-5 Weight: 254
Age: 24 Experience: 1 School: Boston College
Comments: The Jets don't have an aggressive blocker as a tight end and Pantale might be the nearest thing the team has to such a player. While we don't imagine that the Jets would have much use for Pantale this season, we see him as a project player for next year as the team's backup run-blocking tight end.
#9 Brent Qvale - T
Height: 6-7 Weight: 315
Age: 23 Experience: Rookie School: Nebraska
Comments: With nine offensive linemen already on the team's roster, there's not a lot of room for Qvale to move up any time soon. Both Ben Ijalana and Oday Aboushi could play tackle if required, but the team seems to have more backup interior linemen than exterior players, so should the need arise it's not crazy to think that Qvale could get a promotion to the regular roster.
#10 Kerry Hyder - DE
Height: 6-2 Weight: 280
Age: 23 Experience: Rookie School: Texas Tech
Comments: Rex Ryan had some positive remarks for the rookie defensive end, but on a roster that is already brimming with talent on the defensive line, it seems that Hyder might have a long wait this season to play with the Sons of Anarchy.
