There may be a reason why things between the Jets and defensive coordinator candidate Gregg Williams have reportedly slowed down.
Jets new head coach Adam Gase told SNY's Jeane Coakley at his introductory press conference on Monday that one of the things he learned from his time as head coach of the Miami Dolphins was not to rush into hiring the staff.
"What I mean by that is you don't want to start grabbing guys that might be available," he said. "You might have to take your time, interview guys and I think we have the right mindset right now and heading in the right direction and hopefully soon we'll start getting guys on board."
The Jets were reportedly progressing in talks with Williams to become the defensive coordinator on Friday, yet a report from NBC Sports DC on Monday said that nothing has been finalized and the Redskins were working to meet with Williams on Tuesday for an interview.
Gase, who was the play-caller in Miami and plans to do the same in New York, also told reporters that he is considering not having a quarterbacks coach on staff and only going with an offensive coordinator.
"We're still looking into that," he said, per Brian Costello of The Post. "I think the less voices there, the better. I think there needs to be a direct line of communication with myself or if we bring in just a coordinator."
In Miami, Gase hired Clyde Christensen as his offensive coordinator, Bo Hardegree as his quarterbacks coach and Vance Joseph as his defensive coordinator but Joseph left after a year when he was offered the head coaching job with the Denver Broncos.
Gase then hired Matt Burke to replace Joseph and after two seasons, Christensen was moved to Director of Football and Player Development and Dowell Loggains was hired as offensive coordinator for the 2018 season. Hardegree held his position as quarterbacks coach for all three years.
Loggains remains a potential candidate for Gase to bring with him to New York, among other options.
Joseph, along with Williams, were the two preferred candidates the Jets had in mind at defensive coordinator but Joseph was hired by the Arizona Cardinals.
Gase said he hopes "coordinators start rolling in here the next week or two."
"We'll see how it plays out," he said. "The sooner, the better, always. But let's not put a time table on it."
