Jets' Adam Gase remains confident in kicker Taylor Bertolet despite three misses on Thursday

Gase pointed out team errors in operation when talking about Bertolet

The fourth preseason game was a chance for many Jets to prove themselves, with players competing head-to-head for roster spots.

One player who doesn't have anyone else on the roster to compete with is kicker Taylor Bertolet, yet he still may have played himself out of a roster spot in Thursday's 6-0 win over the Eagles.

Bertolet made field goals of 23 and 39 yards, the Jets' only points of the night, but he also missed three more kicks. He pushed a 53-yarder wide right and then hooked a 56-yarder wide left to end the first half. In the second half, he hooked another 49-yard attempt.

When asked about the missed kicks after the game, Adam Gase pointed out that on more than one occasion the Jets had trouble getting the right personnel on the field, which played a big role in Bertolet's lack of rhythm.

"He hit the ones under 40. He had two 50-plus yarders, one 49 (yards) that he missed. We were late coming out twice," Gase said. "That doesn't help a kicker when we're trying to get in rhythm. … (My confidence in him is) good. Two of those I saw guys running out late. You just can't do that to the kicker. You can't bust his rhythm like that."

In three preseason games with Gang Green, Bertolet went 5-for-8 on field goal attempts, while also missing two of four extra point attempts.

"I think I've got to do a better job," Bertolet said after the game. "I know we had some long field goals that I'm capable of hitting. I hit those kicks nearly every single day in practice, so I've just got to do a better job out there.

"It was definitely frustrating. We had some tough kicks. It was long field goals. But that's kind of been my M.O. I've kind of been that guy who goes out and makes long kicks and that's part of the reason why I think our coaching staff had confidence to put me out there tonight. It's usually kicks that I make and I'm looking forward to correcting that."

Gase said that he would be confident going into Week 1 with Bertolet as the team's place kicker, but the personnel staff will continue to have discussions about what's best as more players become available around roster cutdowns this weekend.

"We'll just kind of keep going through what we're talking about tomorrow with the personnel department, kind of see what they're thinking, and we'll just kind of make a decision of what we want to do going forward," said Gase.
