In an expected move, the Jets will pick up Jamal Adams' fifth-year option for the 2021 season, SNY's Ralph Vacchiano confirmed Monday.
The option is expected to be worth $9.86 million.
Jets GM Joe Douglas, speaking on the Michael Kay Show on ESPN Radio later Monday, said the team was "excited" to pick up the option.
Adams, 24, is entering the fourth year of his rookie contract, with a cap hit of $7.17 million in 2020.
While Douglas is on record as wanting Adams to be a Jet for life, there has not yet been meaningful progress with Adams on a potential contract extension.
Adams, who was the subject of trade rumors before last season's deadline and whose future with the Jets is still in doubt, will reportedly skip the team's voluntary offseason virtual program -- something head coach Adam Gase discussed Monday.
"With Jamal, this is voluntary," Gase explained. "That's just what it is. It's one of those things where guys have a choice. If they want to be here, they can. If they don't, it's just what it is. That's the CBA rules and there's nothing that we can really do about that."
Vacchiano reported earlier this month that the most likely scenario was that the Jets wouldn't extend Adams this offseason, noting that the team had control over him through the 2023 season.
