Jets' Christopher Johnson on Jamal Adams: 'I would love to have Jamal on this team forever'

"He's the kind of player you can build around..."

Jets fans don't want to think about this past NFL trade deadline when S Jamal Adams was reportedly almost dealt away. He wasn't traded, but it didn't create a little rift between Adams and the front office.

Since then, the choppy waters have settled, and Jets owner Christopher Johnson may have just put them at a standstill with his comments Wednesday on the dynamic Pro Bowler.

"Jamal is a fantastic player. We saw that this Sunday. He's an extraordinary player," Johnson told reporters. "He's the kind of player you can build around -- you should be around given the chance. Absolutely amazing."

But Johnson didn't stop there. He explained how he would love to see Adams in the green and white for his entire career, which sounds like he wants GM Joe Douglas to continue building around him.

"I would love to have him on the team for the rest of his career," Johnson said. "I would truly love that. Whether he is or not that's up to Jamal, number one, but it's up to Joe. When I hired Joe, I told him he had control of the 53 [man roster] and I told him I would have a very light touch when it came to influencing that. I intend to follow through with that."

Adams said last week that the feud between him and Douglas have ended. The LSU product didn't like hearing his name in trade rumors, especially after a meeting prior to the deadline where he got the impression he wasn't going to even be listened to in trade offers to the Jets. However, it was reported that the Cowboys were close to making a deal happen for Adams.

The rift lasted about a week, with Adams posting to social media to explain how his agent told him Douglas was shopping him to teams. Adams wanted things to cool down before he spoke with Douglas, but when they finally did, he had a "good" conversation with his GM and head coach Adam Gase, according to The Daily News' Manish Mehta, and they both apologized to each other.

"Yeah, I mean I would love to be here man," Adams said. "I would love to be here, it's simple as that. I want to bring success to this organization, I want to bring a Super Bowl to this organization. That's why I feel like I was placed in New York, to kind of pick up where my dad left off. His career was cut short, and I just feel like that's my calling. Do I want to be here? Yes, of course."

And Johnson, though saying he has a light touch on roster moves with Douglas in place, may use that overall power to make sure Adams stays in a Jets uniform to make that statement by the safety come true.

"I would love to have Jamal on this team forever," Johnson said.
