Gailey, 63, was an NFL head coach with the Cowboys and Bills. He will be the Jets' fourth offensive coordinator in five years.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Gailey spoke with three other teams about a job on their staff, and was only interested in "the right team in the right situation."
However, Gailey told the Jets that he would try to get a deal done with them before any of his other suitors (Slater, Jan. 19).
Schefter first reported the Jets and Bowles were interested in Gailey (Jan. 13).
Gailey was most recently the Bills head coach, going 16-32 over three seasons. He has been out of football since he was fired after the 2012 season. He had previously served as an offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos (1989-’90), the Pittsburgh Steelers (1997), the Miami Dolphins (2000-’01) and the Kansas City Chiefs (2008).
